It all started on your average day out to lunch with the girls. While walking down Fifth Street on our way to Billy D's we came upon Black rose's sandwich board. I decided it would be fun to get tattooed that day and T and A didn't seem opposed to the idea. We climbed the stairway up to the studio and the adventure began.

None of us had any of our tattoo designs on us as it wasn't what we had planned for today. So while I wanted for T to take A home to get her sketch I decided that I wanted to get my nose pierced. What I really wanted was an anti-eyebrow but knew it wouldn't fly at work. Damn conservative society. So in lieu of an anti-eyebrow I decided on a nose stud (which I also wanted).

I approached the receptionist about getting it done. She called Sheena and booked me in for my nose piercing. I had half an hour to get home and get my ID and get back across town. T and A finally got back to the shop, we left A with Curt to talk about her tat and we burned across town. We arrived back at the studio with time to spare.

I filled out the consent form saying I wouldn't sue if I didn't like the results and that I had been given the opportunity to ask any questions. I asked about the quality of the stud the screw she would be putting in my nose and if anyone had ever had a reaction to it. I'm very sensitive to foreign materials entering my body. Sheena told me that no, no one had ever had a reaction that she knew of and that was it, off I went.

I was a bit nervous about getting a needle shoved through my nose but that's to be expected. Sheena showed me all the equipment she would be using. The tube was still packaged and so was the needle which I didn't look at. As was the nose screw. I chose a clear rhinestone as it was the least obvious stud.

After showing me the totally sterile equipment and picking my stud Sheena put a dot on my nose to mark the spot. I checked it out and it was just right! I then lay down on the table while she took out the needle and tube with gloved hands. The tube then went in my left nostril and then the needle, followed quickly by the stud. And that was it.

There was a little bit of bleeding and slight bit of discomfort when the needle went in but nothing more then that of a pin prick (if that even). It was done and over with and I was so pleased. I spent the next couple of minutes cross eyed as I was staring at it.

I did feel a minor amount of pain in the right side of my nose 20 minutes later that lasted maybe as hour. It was as though I had a headache in my nose.

So all's well that ends well...

Not in this case. I went to visit my mum for mother's day and when I woke up the second morning I was there it was to find that my screw had managed to fall out and was last somewhere in my bed. I tried in vain to get it back in, I even had my mum trying to get it back it. She was scared that she was doing it wrong or was going to cause some damage so she called the piercing place in town (Parksville) to see if they could help. But as luck would have it they weren't open until much later that day and by then the hole had grown over.

When I came back to Courtenay I headed straight for Black Rose to talk to Sheena. She was more then happy to book me in two weeks later (the hole would be completely healed by then) and as I had found my stud (which was put in the autoclave for a fifteen minute sterilization) wouldn't be charging me much at all for the appointment. The first time cost me $40 plus tip and the second would cost me $23 plus tip. I was really pleased with the service I received from her.

I ended up putting in a different stud a month or so later which didn't take so well as it wasn't surgical steel. Although I normally have no problems with sterling silver it appears that it doesn't belong in my nose. I found a couple of very cute surgical steal studs at Atomic. They cost about $12+ but we're well worth it.

So I am now a proud and happy nose pierced individual and am glad that this was the first step I took to showing who I am on the outside. I can't bear the thought of not having this piercing and will proudly bear it for the rest of my life.
