I'm going to start off by saying DIY isn't the safest way of piercing something. Also, sewing needles and safety pins aren't the right type of tools to be using for the job.

With that said, on with the story.

Ever since I was 11, I've been fascinated by piercings and tattoos. I remember asking for a piercing when I was 14 and being harshly turned down by my rude, judgmental mother. She believed only "badasses" and "devil worshipers" had piercings. Also, I have my ears stretched and she thought I would look too "hardcore" something on my face as well. I honestly didn't think it was too much. Actually I think it would look really nice together.

After 2 years of begging, her answer was still "no".I wanted a piercing so bad. Body modification was like a get-a-way for me. I live such a strict lifestyle and I'm best known for being rebellious. It wasn't like me to take "no" for an answer. I had to do something about this.

I went on BME one day while waiting for two of my best friends to come over and chill. While on this site, I came across the septum piercing. I've seen it before and to be honest didn't think it was all that good looking. Something changed my mind that very second. What would I look like with that? I got up and went straight to the bathroom mirror to check it out. After about a half an hour of thinking, I decided I was going to do it. I was going to pierce my own septum.

I ran upstairs to my mom's room to get a thick needle out of her sewing kit. The needle was around 16g I guess. I set that in some boiling water and got a safety pin to stay in the piercing until I could find real jewelry to put in it. I cleaned my nose and got the needle ready. I've pierced my ears before but this was totally different. This was something on my face. Nervous? You bet I was. But I wasn't going to stop.

Here we go.

I put on some music to relax myself. If you must know, it was Avenged Sevenfold. I got the needle out of the boiling water and cleaned it with alcohol. I put it up to my nose and took a deep breath. I had to ask myself if I was really going to go through with this. I guess I told myself I was because the next thing I knew, I gave one good push and the needle was already halfway through the piece of skin. I felt the other end of the needle poking out the other side but as much as I pushed, it wouldn't budge. This was pissing me off because the pressure tickled my nose and I kept sneezing which made it hard for me to keep the needle from moving. No matter how hard I pushed, that needle was not going to move.

That's it, it was going in whether it wanted to or not. I counted to 3 and pushed the needle with all my strength until, POP! Success! I called one of the friends who was coming over and told her the good news. "Your septum? I didn't see that coming", she said after I told her. I loved that reaction. She has her eyebrow, industrial and her lip pierced three times so I knew she would be the one to get a barbell from. We hung up with each other when she said she was on her way. I put in the safety pin and waited for her and my other friend to arrive.

When they showed up, I was showered with compliments on how good it looked. I had no problem getting the 14g barbell in and already started asking what I should pierce next. The excitement I got just from see the piercing I put in my nose made me want more and more piercings. I'm happy to say I've decided to wait until I pierce anything else and I have lots of barbells just in case I want to do my snakebites. Those will probably be next.

I love my septum! I clean it everyday with antibacterial soap and polysporin and it still isn't infected which is surprising since my skin never heals right. I now have a black circular barbell in it that matches my plugs and my mom has yet to see it. I honestly think no matter how many piercings I get, this will always be my favorite. It makes me feel so free and wild and you have to remember, this is my first real piercing. I feel like I have no boundaries and I could do whatever I want. I know it sounds corny but that's how this little piercing makes me feel and I love it.

My advice, get one if you really want one. See how good it makes you feel. I strongly recommend going to a professional. You can do it yourself if you have the right tools I guess, but a professional would still be the best way to go.
