Over the course of about a year, septum piercings have become very popular in my area. When I started noticing this trend, I hated it. I thought septum piercings were ugly and trendy. It was the "thing to do."

Well, about 4 months ago, my thoughts changed. I suddenly found them fascinating. I don't know what made me change my mind, but quickly after it did, I started pondering the thought of getting mine pierced.

I immediately started doing research and looking at septum piercings of others to ensure that it's what I really wanted to do.

Last month, I decided to take a survey to see what people thought. It came out pretty much 50/50, but it really didn't matter since I finally had my heart set on it. It was nice to see the variety in responses I got.

So finally, two nights ago, I e-mailed my piercer and said I would be in the area working and that I wanted to stop by to talk to him about getting my septum pierced.

I ended up getting out of work early, so I headed down to the shop. I walked in, and he's sitting at the desk. He said hi, and I said "Hey, what's going on?" and he said "Not much, what can I do for you?" and I said "Yeah, I just stopped by to see about getting my septum pierced," and he replied "Yeah, I actually got reading your e-mail ten minutes ago," and I was like "Awesome," and he said "Yeah, the cost for septum is gonna be $60," and I replied "Great, let's do it then."

He then handed me forms to fill out. I walked over to the couch where another girl was sitting. I'm assuming her boyfriend worked at the shop. I quickly filled the forms and gave them back. He then said "There's three pages there," and I'm like "Yeah.." and he said "Oh, you finished? You beasted those," and I just let out a laugh as he led me into the piercing room.

His apprentice took my ID, and I waited in the chair. The girl on the couch peered through the room and asked if she could watch. I said sure, of course, and we began to chat. She asked if I had any other piercings, and I told her about my eyebrow, and she told me she just had her bellybutton. She seemed really chill, so she watched Anwar go to work.

I suppose his apprentice never learned how to pierce a septum before, because Anwar was telling him about the steps to take. I thought it was pretty cool that I was the one he got to learn from.

I must admit, I was kind of nervous. I turned to this site to read about other septum experiences the day before, which is what made me nervous. The majority of stories I read said that the septum is the most painful piercing.

After Anwar prepped me, he told me to sit up, so I did, and I gripped the sides of my chair. He explained the procedure to me and was very informative as to what exactly the septum was and how to do it correctly. It relaxed me a bit, because I knew he knew what he was doing. The clamp was positioned, and he finally said "Ready?" and I replied with a "Uh-huh," and then he said "Okay, breathe in," so I took a big breath and the needle went through.

I didn't feel much pain - just the uncomfortableness of having a needle through my nose. Honestly, the worst part was actually hearing the skin tear. It was kind of gross. The part that hurt most was when he actually put the jewelery in, which I expected.

After he stepped away to get the balls to the jewelery, my eyes started to water. After it was all done, the girl watching said "Wow. You look awesome. He did an amazing job," so I was pretty confident that it looked good.

I got up to look in the mirror, and his apprentice said to me "You. Are a warrior!" It was hysterical. I took a look in the mirror, and I loved what I saw. I thanked him repeatedly and paid for my new piercing.

It's safe to say that my mom hates it. But she knows that I'm 18, and being 18 means looking forward to something like this. She thinks it's hideous, but she's over it.

I am completely infatuated with my new piercing, and I'm looking forward to going back in two weeks to have my new jewelery put in since the one I have now is too big for my nose. I'm also looking forward to seeing Anwar for future piercings. He did a fantastic job, and I'd recommend him to anyone.

I'm so thankful for having such a nice experience. If you're thinking about getting a septum piercing, definitely go for it. It's way worth it, and it's very convenient to hide for work, around people who you don't want seeing it, etc.
