Like alot of people, upon first seeing a septum piercing I didn't really like it.. i thought it looked like the ring through a bull's nose or something, but in time it grew on me as I met a few people who had one themselves.

I became obsessed with piercings when I was about 12, spending hours on piercing websites and reading up on experiences - I soon had loads of ideas as to what I wanted pierced myself, but my parents happen to be incredibley small minded when it comes to any form of body modification, so I was confined to my ear lobes for the time being. I started out with standard lobe piercings, but soon stretched them into tunnels and got a few cartilage piercings which my parents still haven't noticed :/ this year I decided I couldn't wait any longer and went ahead and got my smiley and my nipple pierced. They are both totally concealed but I love them to bits!

After talking to a friend of mine, he totally convinced me about the greatness of septum piercings and I decided on getting one myself as soon as I had the cash! The only catch was that I could only get it done if it could be pierced with some sort of retainer to keep it hidden. So sure enough, yesterday I dragged my friend along with me to my local piercers and enquired about a septum. The piercer, Jackie, had a septum herself and told me she could pierce it with this tiny bar (it looks sort of like a silver labret bar with a little o-ring on the end) and she was free to do it now.

I waited out front and shakily filled in the form with my details while she went out the back to put the things in the autoclave and set up. I left my bag with my friend and followed Jackie out a minute later where she had me sit upright with my back against the wall on the chair. She told me she wasn't going to lie to me - I should expect pain, but it would be over quickly and just feel strange as its concentrated in the middle of your face and your eyes are likely to water cause of all the nerves.

She changed her gloves numerous times and proceeded to feel around in my nose (I've never had a Suicidegirl stick her fingers up my nose before..) and told me there was plenty of room. She sprayed the inside with 'banana' flavoured/smelling freeze spray and applied some strange looking green stuff onto my septum with cotton buds to kill any germs. Jackie kept asking me if I was ok, I told her yes and I was ready. She put the septum clamps in my septum, which didn't hurt like I was expecting it to, and then stuck the needle through as I took deep breaths. It hurt! But it wasn't unbearable, just intense cause its in the middle of your face like she had said, my eyes didn't water though which I was pretty happy about as I had gone heavy on the eyeliner that day haha.

I was soo pleased it was done and the anticipation was over - now my only worry was whether it was visable.. she gave me a mirror to look in and sure enough you couldn't see a thing (unless you stare up my left nostril you can kinda see the end of it). She advised me to simply not play with it, and clean it with sea salt water and cotton buds about twice a day and said it should be healed in 6-8 weeks.

I walked back into the shop to show my friend, which was pretty pointless cause she couldn't see a thing as intended! We thanked Jackie (she's lovely and very helpful), paid my £30, waited for my friend to get the surface piercing under her belly button removed (it had gone all skanky as it was coming to the end of its life.. she decided she'd rather take it out now then be left with a scar!) and off we went.

I'm planning to change it to some sort of horseshoe when its healed, so I can wear it down when I'm out then flip it up when around my parents or at school. Just worried I'm gonna get so used to it I'll end up showing my parents by accident!

It's a day old now and its doing great, I've cleaned it once and I can't even feel it apart from if I rub my nose by accident or something, in which case it feels pretty sore but thats understandable. I'm dreading getting a cold as I'm pretty prone to them when its cold, I hear you have to remaster the art of sneezing so you don't upset your piercing too much! Anyone thinking of getting this piercing.. do it! They look amazing, are pretty unusual, the pain isn't that bad considering the placement and its over in under a second. I can't wait til mines healed so I can go show the world my strange new piercing; it's great cause I only know of four other people in my Town and all the surrounding area with it done too. Good luck!
