I find it funny that at first I wasn't even slightly interested in having a septum piercing. I mean for some of "those" people it was all good and fine, but me? Nah.

Well, maybe it was an interesting piercing. I mean, I'd never seen one in person before. And yeah, I guess they look okay on some people. You know, come to think of it, they aren't half bad. Who knows, one might even look okay on me.

My acceptance of the piercings suddenly became much more. Suddenly, they were an obsession – something I wanted, wanted bad enough that I'd be willing to do just about anything to have one. I'd even wait to get the piercing if I had to, as long as it was mine eventually.

Unfortunately, there were some obstacles between the uniting of me and some metal in my septum...

First and foremost are parents. My mother wrinkled her nose and voiced her disgust. I thought that maybe she might be more apt to accept the septum, provided it could be easily hidden, but I was wrong. After a month of badgering, I got her to agree to give me a final answer by June of 2006. I knew I'd have her convinced.

All was good and fine, I happily read experiences and looked at pictures, until I decided to get my nostril pierced in March of 2006. It was my first visit to my piercers to actually get pierced. It was bad enough that their normal piercer wasn't there, but when I mentioned getting my septum pierced, their step-in piercer informed me I would have to be 16 before I could have it done. That proved to be a problem, as I was 14. I left a little crestfallen, but set on having my septum pierced the minute I turned 16. A few months passed, I got my vertical industrial and navel pierced – both by their normal piercer. When getting my belly pierced, I tried again, and asked how old I would have to be to get my septum pierced. It was, in fact, 14 not 16! I was ecstatic.

I spent two weeks shoveling sand to save up the money to pay for my septum, and finally, the day came. June 8th 2006.

My stomach was in knots as my mother and I drove to the piercers. I had barely been able to eat, but forced myself to have some lunch (everyone knows; no piercing on an empty stomach.) We arrived and I told the piercer what I wanted and with what jewelry. While I filled out the paperwork my mother informed him that she'd be having her first real piercing, a simple helix. Soon all was ready and we headed into the piercing room.

I decided to go first and hopped up on the table. The piercer washed his hands and got out the jewelry I had selected – a 14g circular barbell – and widened it so it would fit my nose. He then had me lie down on the table with my head hanging off the edge. A light was turned on directly over my face and he set about finding the sweet spot of my septum and marking it. This took a few minutes. Finally he handed me some gauze for wiping my eyes and set to work, placing the needle against the mark on one side and the receiving tube on the other. The moment the needle touched against my septum my eyes started watering.

I was instructed to breathe in and breath out once, and then twice. Once I had let out the breath on the second, the needle went through. Pain! Not horrible, but definitely intense. My eyes were streaming. Next came the jewelry and screwing on the balls. I sat up and wiped my eyes a few times and looked in the mirror handed to me. I loved it!! My nose was sore, but it was so worth it. I grinned widely as the piercer went over aftercare. Next my mother got her piercing, but that's another story.

All in all, I love my piercing so much. If I had to go back and have it redone, I would – but let's just say I'm glad I don't. On a scale from 1 to 10 the pain level was 6 or 7. Despite that, it was worth all the pain and it's my favorite piercing. It's now the day after I've had it pierced and it's still sore. There was a little dried blood when I cleaned it this morning but nothing disconcerting. After it's healed I plan on stretching it, and I hope on ending up at a 4g or so.

In closing, if you are considering this piercing, go for it! Make sure you find a good piercer who can pierce it properly and enjoy yourself.
