For my 18th birthday, I went and got my Septum pierced on April 24. I'd been reading experiences on here, and other sites trying to get an idea of what it was going to feel like, and all the experiences I read said that it was either terribly painful, or that it didn't hurt at all and the clamps were the worst part, so I really didn't know what to expect.

I made my friends Lauren and Jared go with me, and I kept getting more and more nervous as I was filling out the paperwork and paying. When it was time to head upstairs to the piercing room, I almost passed out going up the stairs because I was so nervous. So I sat down on the chair, and Nadine, my piercer gave me a drink of water to get me to relax a little bit. After I had calmed down, she explained what she was going to do, showed me the needle, jewelry and the clamps so I could see that they were still in the unopened packages.

After she had finished explaining and showing me everything, she began to rub the numbing gel into my septum after washing her hands and putting on gloves. After about 10 minutes of rubbing in the numbing gel, she asked how much I could feel, and I told her that I could still feel my nose but probably didn't need anymore. So she opened up the clamps and felt around for my "sweet spot", which she found was very compatible for the piercing. So she put the clamps on my septum, and honestly, those really were the worst part. They had little teeth or something on them that stung a little, but it went away in a few seconds once I got used to it. She asked if I was ready, I told her yes, and she lined the needle up with the hole in the clamps. Once more, asked if I was ready, then slowly counted to three, and on three pushed the needle through.

I was amazed at how little it hurt. It was barely anything at all. To me, getting my ear cartilage hurt worse. After opening up the jewelry package and sterilizing it, she slid the ring in and put the ball on the other end. I chose a 14 guage circular barbell for my starter jewelry over a retainer, because I move a lot in my sleep and was afraid the retainer would come out too easily at night. After the jewelry was in and I had seen the piercing in the mirror to make sure I liked it, she explained the aftercare and gave me a little baggie of sea salt. She told me to clean it three or four times a day, preferably after a shower, to make sure not to overclean it, and the usual no peroxide or ointments rule.

I've had it for 2 days now, and its perfectly fine. It's not swollen at all, it didn't bleed at all during piercing or after and still hasn't. It doesn't hurt at all, and I can barely feel it. I love that its so easy to hide, because neither my parents of work know that I have it done, because I wear it flipped up into my nose when I'm around my parents or at work, and its worked wonderfully. Its completely invisible unless you look up at my nose from a very steep angle, that no one will be looking from. After one month, I can go back and have the jewelry changed, and I plan on getting a slightly smaller circ. barbell, because the one I have is just a tiny bit too long for my taste, and I'd like it to not stick out of my nose as far as it does. The one I have will be perfect for while it's healing though, so I'm not too worried.

If you're thinking about getting this piercing, I'd definitely say go for it, because at least for me, it was almost painless and is healing perfectly. I have a very low tolerance for pain as well, so for it to be painless to me, makes me think that anybody could probably handle it.
