Well this was the only piercing I have that I actually thought about for a long time and fully researched before getting poked. I don't really know why it became so appealing to me, but I love heavy rock and metal music so obviously I'd seen pictures of the guy from Coal Chamber who has one. After looking at lots of photos on Tribaletic and BME and seeing the more interesting jewelry like circular barbells, plugs, pinchers, and etc septum piercing just started to seem really freaking awesome. Crap, I even put a cbr without a bead on mine to see if it would look ok (I kinda put it up there so the open end was where the piercing would be). A major plus in my opinion was the hideablity of a septum, since my mom isn't overly thrilled with my other piercing anyway. So then of course, I start to get that little itch on my septum that says, "Won't you please shove a needle through me!"

At that time, I was in my tiny hometown working for the summer, so needless to say it wasn't gonna happen soon. I started talking to my friends about it and my roommate told me we had to go do it when school started. So then I called Nobody's Hero, since I know Nicc does an excellent job with placement and have had him do piercings on me before, and got the prices for septum and industrial (which was what my roommate wanted). Well we tried driving to Boise from where school is a few days later, getting all psyched and listening to Tool on the way, and of course the piercer wasn't in that particular day. Argh.

A few more days later and we're driving down the road listening to the Tool cd Aenima and talking about how we thing this is all going to go. We stopped on the way and got some fried mushrooms and shakes so that we wouldn't get all woozy or whatever. Two of our friends came, and I don't think they really knew what I was going to get pierced. We walk into the shop and Nicc asks what he can help us with and I reply that I was the one who called about the septum piercing. He was like, oh cool. My roommate backed out of getting an industrial and got a regular cartilage rim piercing instead, big chicken...

I was going to have a 16 gauge surgical steel retainer for jewelry, it was actually the only septum retainer that they had in stock. We all went back to his piercing room where I laid down on the table so he could clean out my nose. My roommate had me laughing my ass off the whole time by singing that song from Aenima that is in german and sounds all evil, but is really just a cookie recipe. It was funny as hell having someone clean my nose and we were all joking about it. Nicc took forever making the perfect marks for the piercing and apparently I have some nice weird nose structure... hmm that could be due to all the times I've broken it I guess.

When the time came for the actual piercing he lined up the needle on the right side and the receiving tube on the left. I closed my eyes because I knew I'd tense up if I watched. Breathe deep. One, two. And slide, in it went. My eyes watered and my roommate says I pulled a face, but it didn't hurt. Well not in a bad way anyway. I looked down at the needle and I swear that is the coolest thing I have ever seen in my life, of course that's when the adrenaline kicked in as well... so yeah. I could feel the jewelry and needle moving when he was putting in the retainer, but it only hurt good. Then came the looking in the mirror.... It was so great! He flipped it up once to make sure it'd go and then left it down for me to gape at.

Healing my septum went really well. It was super fun to do the sea salt soaks, bubbles and all you know and cleaning my nose w/moist q-tips made me sneeze like none other for the first few days. It hurt like a bitch every time I accidentally hit the end of my nose though. I started wearing it flipped up after the first two days cause everyone on my floor thought I was insane and told me how weird it looked. It healed in like two weeks. Seriously. I got a teeny 5/16, 16 gauge circular barbell to put in it and loved the way it looked. Then after like a couple weeks I lost one of the damn balls. So I had to go back to the retainer again. I'll tell you, it probably looked really bad whenever I played with it which I did like all the time. Since I was totally broke I didn't buy another cool barbell for a long time.

Then like a year and half later, I was having a really bad piercing urge, but couldn't get pierced since I was on swim team. So instead I decided to stretch my septum and lobe piercings. I went to New Moon in Boise, since I couldn't find Nicc and Nobody's Hero had moved, and it stretched to a 14 gauge circular barbell, just plain ol' stainless steel. The stretch went very smooth, probably because I always play with my septum piercing, and only had that slight burning pain that a good stretch has. The guy, I believe his name was Wade, but could be wrong, left the taper in for a minute when it was half through to give the piercing a minute to accommodate to the new size and then went the rest of the way and put in the jewelry. I love actually having bigger jewelry because the slight movement caused by the weight of it has a very sensual feel. I liked the stretch cause the straight taper looked cool in my nose. Who knows maybe someday I'll stretch to a 12 and get a nice tribal bone piece or something.
