When I was younger I always looked at septum piercings somewhat with disgust, but I gradually began to like them more and more. I was keen to get it done for sometime before I actually did it, and I spent a long time reading up about it. The piercing seemed perfect for me as I work in an environment that does not allow facial piercings, and I understood that the septum could be easily hidden with a retainer.

The more I read up about septum piercings however, the more nervous I became. Many sources said that the piercing was very painful, and that an infection could easily prove fatal due to the positioning of the piercing. However by this time my heart was pretty much set on having it done.

I didn't plan a particular date to get it done, but one day I was in brighton with my friend who wanted a surface piercing, so I thought I might as well go and at least enquire.

We went to Metaflesh, as it has an outstanding reputation and a fantastic atmosphere. I wouldn't like to go anywhere else. Metaflesh are very careful about the jewelery the use to pierce, to make sure it heals optimally, so I was a little worried that they would insist on initially piercing my septum with visible jewelery. However they pierce with a retainer, as there is less chance of it getting knocked, or yanked by dick-heads.

The piercer took a long time making sure that i was absolutely sure that I wanted the piercing. Metaflesh are fantastic, theres no 'wham-bam-thankyou-for-your-dosh-ma'am'. In honesty I was absolutely bricking it, due to all the tales of pain and agony, so I chose to have anesthetic.

The actual piercing experience was fantastic, Warren is such a friendly, chatty chappy that I felt reasonably at ease. He spent a long time making sure the piercing would look straight on my septum, I presume it could be quite tricky as most of us have deviated ones. I had anesthetic so it didn't hurt one little bit. I felt the needle go through, but that felt kind of nice haha! As soon as it was done, (excuse the cheese), I just felt so incredibly complete, it was incredible and unlike any other piercing i've had before or since.

The septum is so easy to heal up and look after, you just leave the bugger alone! Occasionally you just have to make sure the retainer is balanced so one side doesn't get sore, but thats about it. It was incredibly sore for a while if i knocked the underside of my nose, but that didn't happen very often so i dealt with it. The main thing you have to watch out for is washing your face in the shower, I always forgot it was there and boshed it really hard.

As it began to heal nicely I occasionally picked the scabby bits off the inside, (in a very ladylike fashion) with a cotton bud... and ta-da, before I knew it, it was healed. I wore a ring in it for a few months, but now I have a nostril piercing on each side, pierced with rings, so I wear a horseshoe bar.

My biggest regret is getting anesthetic. i've never had it before or since and I wish I had had the full experience of gaining my favourite hole! But c'est la vie, regret is pretty pointless.

I have to admit that the response I have got from my septum piercing has not been entirely positive. A lot of my friends, although alternative and into bodymods, greeted me with "oh my god, what have you done? take that piece of shit out!". Strangers meet me with "Why would you want to look like a bull?", and my dad finds it hilarious to make pig noises when I'm around him. I presume he's referring to the pig from The Owl and The Pussy Cat, as I know not of any other pigs with nose-piercings. Be warned though, a septum piercing is a one-way ticket to enduring hilarious bull-related comments. But it never bothered me because i love it so much. i suppose it's a relatively unusual piercing to have, especially for a girl, so it gets some getting used to. The people that do like it though think it's fantastic... and i'm very proud of it, in fact I think one day I shall name it.

The piercing has been perfect for work- now i don't even bother with the retainer, i just flip my ring up and down, depending on the situation. It was four months before even my parents realised I had it. To be honest, as unbelievable as this may sound, my septum piercing has had such an effect on my own psyche, that i would be happy for no-one to ever even know it was there. It is as though it is a part of my body i have been missing all this time.

I've had a few piercings since, but my septum remains my favorite. I swear it pierced through happy nerve, I'd recommend it to anyone!! x x
