I finally got my septum pierced yesterday and it was so worth it. I never used to think septum's were very attractive piercing's, I had never seen them unless they were really big or on someone who didn't suit it at all, until one day I saw a picture of a beautiful girl with a retainer in, and I fell in love with the piercing. Now when I first saw this picture I wasn't quite 16 and I knew my parents would never sign for it in a million years, so I had to wait a few months until I turned 16. The only problem being once I turned 16 in November and starting in February I start playing rugby, so I figured I wouldn't have enough time for it to properly heal to take it out for what would be 1-2 hours at a time. So I waited till now and rugby is over and it has time to heal.

So with all my excitement built up, I had barely any room for nerves and I walked into the shop smiling. Barry the piercer gave me the required forms to sign and as I filled them out he went and set everything up in the backroom. I was now starting to get a bit nervous at the fact that I was actually and finally getting it done. He had me sit on his table as he cleaned my nose and searched for the "sweet spot", which should be the skin between the two plates of cartilage in your nose. He marked me nose and let me check it out to make sure they look even since it's very easy to pierce it on an angle and have it look horrible. All looked well, so I decided now was the time to ask my questions before it was over. My first and main question was is this going to hurt? And to my surprise he told me it wouldn't hurt, he then explained that it shouldn't hurt if it's pierced properly because it's only going through the skin. I then asked to see the jewelry. He had picked out a small "bullring" type piece for me that was a 16g, I hadn't really wanted a bullring but I figured if that's all he has it'll have to do. I then asked my last question about the gauge size since I was only getting a 16g put through, he reassured me that once it healed the skin's elasticity would come back and should easily fit a 14g without stretching.
Now for the actual piercing part. He told me to lie down and hang my head off the end of the table, he stuck the clamps on, which do not hurt AT ALL, and I closed my eyes. I could feel the needle on my skin about to pierce me and then all of a sudden it was done. It hurt maybe as bad as a simple ear lobe piercing but took maybe 2 seconds to go through, there was no "popping" sound or anything. Everything I had read/heard about the piercing was far from the truth. The most pain you will feel is when the jewelry goes through which is very bearable and not that painful at all. This was the most painful for me because the ring that we had previously chosen was too small to get all the way through my nose, this we found out after we had pushed it half way through. So the piercer had to run next door to the tattoo part of the shop and get a bigger ring and by that time the other side of my septum had started to heal, so we had to sort of re-pierce it.
Over all my piercing did not hurt like I had read about although there is a tiny bit of pain, I won't lie. It was swollen a bit the first day and looked a little funny but it settled down quite nicely today and I'm in complete love with it. I have been cleaning it with Epsom salts and water with q-tips and working it through the hole by moving the ring and it looks like its healing quite nicely. I've had many compliments on it and I think it actually suits me quite nicely. Mind you my parents hate it but they understand I'm in absolute love with it and there's nothing they can do about it since I will never take it out.
If you have any questions please feel free to email me, I've tried to cover everything you need to know and that I would have liked to know before I got it.
