This took place mostly around the start of April 2005, and I won't lie and say the I wanted this for so long, dreamt about it in my sleep (the only piercing dream I recall is my nipples), blah blah. I did not research the hell out of it, I did not scratch my chin endlessly, did not think and calculate it all over carefully and all that jazz. It's a piercing; it's removable, hence not permanent. Funny, this is the mentality of my family, a view which gives them mild to moderate acceptance of my piercings.

Yeah, ok, so mine was done upon impulse. A little impulse once in awhile, often doesn't hurt anyone. A friend and I were sitting around one day, talking about mods, you know one of those discussions we members on here can often be found having. On one hand we were discussing new things we'd like to get. I said something to the effect of how when I was younger I used to sometimes put a ring in my nose and pretend I had my septum pierced, and how I thought it would look good on me. I knew I didn't want anything too big, because I would find it too distractive on my face. And I didn't want a large septum ring hanging down onto my lip, practically into my mouth. It just was not the look I wanted to be sporting this year. If I change my mind, I could always dermal punch or taper my to something larger. A few hours later I found myself in the piercing chair, gripping the sides, eyes closed, I was pretty nervous (I always build up my pre-conceived pain notions of what spots on the body I think would be most painful). Thus, I thought with all that tissue and cartilage to go through, this was really going to kill. Breath in, breath out, ta-ta its through, I look up, "that's it." Jesus, I was afraid for nothing. Sigh of relief. Follow through the needle with the 14g ring, and volla. A new and improved sniffer. My nose was minimally tender and itchy for the next couple days. I just soaked with sea salt on a regular basis for five minutes each time, 3 times a day, and kept the area as clean as I could. Naturally my nose produced more secretion due to the healing process. Thus mucus would form around the jewellery inside at the entrance and exist points and up inside my nose. I couldn't blow my nose for like 3 weeks, the build up would bug me at times. Sometimes I would utter the words, its more trouble than it is worth. The aftercare is always more of a pain in the ass for me than the initial procedure.

A couple weeks later though, I took it out because I thought that I would rather like to have two rings, and would need to remove it for placement arrangement. Then at the beginning of April, after letting it heal for 3 1/2 - 4 months, I got it re-pierced. Pierced with a 12ga needle, but the 12ga jewellery on hand wouldn't fit my nose, so I decided to put a 14ga in and stretch up to a 12ga in a couple weeks. Septum stretching is a bitch so some say. But it's only 14 to 12, so it shouldn't be too bad i think especially with a taper. When tapering the septum one must always go step-by-step never trying to jump gauges. My nose was tender and itchy, but it healed well, with the sea salt soakings 2-3 times a day it has healed well. Its a far better idea to heal one major piercing at a time, its easier for the body that way. All in all my experience was just fine minus the few bumps to my nose I suffered thanks to myself, my boyfriend and friends. Since then, I have stretched it to 12 gauge myself, no problems or pain for me what so ever. Its healed, and the jewellery moves easily, smoothly in the nose, and is ready to be tapered up to a 10 gauge. I think I'll leave it at 10. I have no desire for anything bigger.

The only annoyance with this septum piercing for me is the nose junk. The bugger, snot that clumps up around inside the nose and on the jewellery making it painful or impossible to rotate. I've become obsessed with the daily cleaning of my nose using wetted q-tips and facial tissues and this works fine for me. Over all the piercing procedure itself was a pretty-painless experience I had it built up in my head to be more than it was. I usually do that. I recall going, huh, that was it? Where's the searing pain, blood, headache? I don't know how long I'll have it for. I know for the most part in public I will have to keep it hidden for work and such, but I can live with that. I doubt that I will dermal punch my septum any time soon. Although I would consider if there is room, getting a second 14ga ring up in there and wear it in conjunction with this one. So there you have it, friends, family, countrymen and women, I have joined the bull ring society.
