Getting my septum done was a long time coming for me! This piercing is so unique--as you all know! I wanted something practical. Something that I would be happy with, something that my employer would be happy with, and most importantly, something that my family would approve of...conservative they are! I chose the septum piercing because it's loud, yet settle-- meaning I can make it go away!

Unlike a rebel, I made sure to get my parents permission before getting it done. To my surprise, they gave me the go ahead on a Friday, so I went to get it done the following Saturday. Thanks to BME, I knew everything that I needed to know before going through with the procedure. It put me at an advantage, but also at a disadvantage, because I knew almost exactly what was coming.

When I arrived at Piercology, I didn't know what to expect, because I had never been there before, or to any piercing studio before for that matter! It's small, but cozy and comfortable. The staff is extremely friendly as well. The lady asked how she could help me, and I told her that I was there to get my septum pierced. She took my ID, and got some other information for the computer. She asked me what kind of jewelry I would like (I went with the ever so popular 14g septum retainer) autoclaved it, and then proceeded to ring me up with some satin soap and some complimentary sea salt! After all of that was dealt with, she went over aftercare with me.

The wait was about 10 minutes-- all the more time for me to get worked up! My piercer, David, escorted me back to the room where I would be getting pierced. It reminded me of a doctors office, seriously! There was a doctor bed, with the paper that rolls out and makes all kinds of noise when you sit up on it. He explained the procedure to me and then asked me if I had any questions. I didn't. He cleaned my nose with a substance that smelled exactly like a hospital, which wasn't pleasant. Although I felt nice and sterile, I hate hospitals. I watched him open everything from it's own sterile package, and once that was finished it was time for him to find my 'sweet spot' and mark me! He did this by taking two toothpicks, putting them in both of my nostrils, and basically just poking around (harmlessly!) until he found my sweet spot. However, it made me feel extremely uncomfortable because I had to lay down. I don't know what it was about laying down that made me feel uneasy, but I didn't feel that way for long. He made me feel at ease by talking to me and asking if I was OK.

I had to stay in the horizontal position for the piercing itself, which by this time, I was fine with. He put the needle in the right side of my nostril, and the receiving tube in the left side. He asked me to take a deep breath in, and then let it out. He then asked me to do it again-- but I knew what was coming, so I couldn't bring myself to do it! This thing that I had wanted for so long was right there, but so far away at the same time, because I was being scared. After a few repetitions of him asking me to breath in and out, I had to sit up. He explained to me how important it was for me to be totally ready and willing for him to pierce me, and I understood. I had to go home. He took me back out to the waiting area, and he explained my options to me. One being that I could get a complete refund and the other being that I could just get a card saying that I paid, and then come back anytime to get it done. I opted for the second choice, because a part of me thought that I might not even go back if I went with the refund.

Exactly one week later, I felt ready! I made the trip back to Piercology-- showed them my 'paid' card, and waited for about 10 minutes again. This time I didn't think about what was going to happen, I just tried to put it all out of my mind, which helped a ton! My piercer came out to escort me back to the room, where the same exact procedure as the previous time was followed. Then came the hard part, going through what I feared before. I was bound and determined to do it this time though. I took a deep breath in, and then out. One more breath in, and then when I let it out is when he stuck the needle through! I had such an overwhelming feeling of just "oh my goodness, I can't believe I actually did it!" It didn't hurt AT ALL and believe you me, I don't deal with pain. It made my eyes water a bit, but I swear I was crying because I was so happy!

So that was it! I finally had my first real piercing! It looked so incredible, and I was so proud of myself! I was a little dizzy, with the adrenaline rush and all, but it was well worth it. I felt like one of 'them' when I walked out of the room. Afterward I got a smoothie from the little shop downstairs, and that curbed my dizziness a little. Aftercare was a breeze, and it healed beautifully.
