From the time I was about 16 I had an interest in piercing. I had my ears pierced several times that had all been stretched to various degrees. It didn't take long for me to become bored with ears, they were fun but it wasn't enough for me.

After looking around on Internet at various piercings I decided I wanted to get my septum pierced. After I got enough money together and got the courage together to go through with the piercing I headed to the piercing studio. My heart was beating very fast and very hard the whole way there. After parking and getting the courage to get out of my car and walk into the studio I found of that the piercer was out for the day, all that for nothing.

I arranged a time to come back when the piercer was in. I again got the courage together to go back to the studio, this time knowing the piercer was going to be there. I told the piercer what I wanted, the piercer seemed a bit surprised by my choice. He left to get his things ready, after about 10 minutes, which seemed like days, he led me back to his room, sat me down and explained the process.

I watched as he opened the sterile packages, first the ring, then the q-tips, then the forceps. he turned around in his chair and grabbed the needle, the thing looked about 1/8 inch thick, I had never seen anything like it before, looked like the end of huge hypodermic needle. when he opened the packaging for the needle I saw what was going to make the hole in my nose and my blood ran cold. he asked if I was ready, I took a few deep breaths and told him I was ready. I wasn't ready at all, I wanted to back out. he cleaned the area to be pierced, he wiped my septum with and horrible smelling cleaner, not sure if it was alcohol or something else, but it smelled bad. He positioned the forceps at the front of my septum and put a small rubber band around the handle to keep pressure on it. he then picked up the needle, at this point I has pretty much lost my mind, my heart was racing, it felt like it was going to break through my chest. he then told me to take a few deep breaths. he told me he was going to count to 3 and he wanted me to exhale hard on 3. 3 came faster then I thought, I don't even remember 1 or 2. right after I exhaled I felt the worst pinching pain of my life but as fast as it started it was gone. I could see the needle in the corner of my eyes. with the needle in he removed the forceps. he asked how it felt and I just looked at him and he snickered.

He then took the ring and inserted it into the dull end of the needle, as he pulled the needle through the ring went right into place. I thought the pain was over, and it was, until he screwed on the balls of the circular barbell, one of them didn't go on right the first time and it kind of pulled on my new piercing, causing some very minor bleeding and a horribly sharp pain. he apologized but I was in too much pain to be angry. after he got both balls on he cleaned the piercing with the q-tips and the bad smelling cleaner. I turned and looked into the mirror and smiled at what I saw.

I was warned by many people that septum is one of the most painful piercings and from my experience I would tend to agree with them. to anyone considering a septum piercing, or any piercing for that matter, don't worry about the pain, it fades quickly. and the resulting metal is worth it. My family was excited to see my new piercing, they gave me a little bit of the "that must have hurt" look when they saw it but they didn't say anything. I think that they actually thought it was kind of cool looking.

To this day I still get great joy from seeing the shock on people's face when they see my septum, now 10g. Most people don't say anything to me about my septum but I do get people saying "that had to of hurt" to themselves even before they are past me. When ever notice someone staring at me I like to kind of wink at them, really scares and confuses some people.

I have been at 10g for several months now, I'm ready to go to 8g, I have no idea what gauge I will stop at. I'll have to see how I like 8g. anyways, thanks for letting my share my experience with you.
