My septum and bridge experience.

Here recently, in the past 2 months, I have more interest in body piercing. Not that it is new for me, but I have been lazy and poor. My boyfriend has a piercer that has been doing his projects for a decent amount and he wanted to know if I would mind getting anything done. I was hesitant at first because all that I have had up to that point was two stretched ear lobe piercings, a labret, and two eyebrow rings that did not work out. I do not like losing piercing due to infection or that they are pierced wrong. I believe that once you get it, it means something; it holds a special place in my heart. After a bit of thinking I decided to go ahead and be pierced again. The problem was I did not know what I wanted to be done. After looking around on a few web pages, I decided that an industrial would look good. I decided to go with that and it turned out great and is healing fine.

Little did I know that it would start to become increasingly addictive. Two weeks after the industrial my boyfriend asked if I wanted anything else pierced. He suggested that a bridge or a septum would accent my face. He had just gotten his septum done a few weeks before and told me that it hurt bad getting it done. I decided that the bridge would be the piercing I would go with. My boyfriend and I went over to his piercer's place to get my bridge done. On the way over, he was asking me if I wanted to get my septum done as well. If I had my septum the same time, I would not focus on the bridge piercing. This was the first time I was actually nervous about being pierced. I did not know what I was about ready to engage in.

We arrived at Jay's, the piercer, and I had to wait before I went inside. I felt like I was about ready to chicken out but I sucked it up and went inside. After Jay prepared the forceps and everything, I sat in the chair to get my septum done first. I decided that the septum would be at a 14-gauge and the bridge at a 16-gauge. He pulled down my nostril with the forceps and went for the needle. I heard, "I'm going to count to three: one, two..." then I felt it. There was a sharp stinging sensation in my nose. My eyes watered up fast. It felt like the soreness of a pimple inside of your nose, right after you pop it. I sat there for what seemed like forever. He asked if I wanted to put the jewelry in I said, "Gimme a second." I could not tell at that point whether the tears were a reaction from just being pierced or from me crying. I thought my industrial was tough, it was nothing compared to this. After the initial needle went through, it did not feel that bad. I sat there for a couple of minutes taking it all in while my boyfriend took pictures of all the madness.

Jay then began to put the jewelry in. It went in easy and he started to screw the ends on (it was a horseshoe piece of jewelry with two spikes for the balls). He fumbled the spikes twice, which made me more nervous about the next piercing. I looked into the mirror and it looked good! I was happy, a sense of relief came over me and I did not feel the pain much more in my nose. My boyfriend and Jay were telling jokes, I started to laugh, and that hurt. I noticed that I could not move my upper lip much. Since I had just gotten the septum done, I figured that it was normal. It was now time for the bridge.

I just kept telling myself that the bridge would not hurt near as much as the septum. He had done a decent job on the septum and at this point, I was excited about my bridge. He sterilized the 16-gauge barbell I had brought for my bridge. The time had come for my last piercing of the night. He clamped the skin between my eyes and held the needle up. The needle went in and it did not hurt nearly as bad as the septum. The only difference was that I felt more pressure like someone was pushing their thumb as hard as they could in between my eyes. He slid the barbell in one whole and then, I thought, out the other end. I was watching him push the barbell through when I saw this look of "uh-oh" on his face. I asked what was wrong and he replied that he had lost the end of the barbell. I felt my hands start to shake; this is what I did not want to happen. I sat there worrying whether or not this piercing was for nothing or if it could be saved. Finally, he managed to pull the other side of the barbell out of the skin. As one would expect, I was bleeding from where he was fishing around with the jewelry. He put the balls on and it was crooked! I started to panic, after all this trouble the thing ends up being crooked. I looked in the mirror and it was only off a little. I figured it could be solved by putting a shorter barbell in.

I sat in the chair because I began to feel a little lightheaded. I noticed that my septum was not hurting anymore and my bridge that had been done was throbbing. Shortly after, I paid Jay and my boyfriend and I went home. I cleaned the piercing a little to get the blood off them. It has been about a week since I had the piercings and they are both healing up nicely. There are no bad infections in them or painful soreness. The only soreness I have is with septum but I think it will take a few weeks for it to heal properly. Overall, I think the experience made me more aware of what actually hurts and what does not. I like both my piercings and think that they do look good. Bridges should not hurt as mine did but the most painful piercing I have had up to date is my septum.
