Back in 1998 around Christmas time I had been contemplating getting another piercing. You know that itch you get when you haven't had something modified in a while right? Well in discussion with my then boyfriend and then girlfriend I finally decide what on my "to do list" would be next. This time I'd get my septum done, and hopefully soon. Well as it turns out it was to happen sooner than I thought. My boyfriend while out and about in Nashville drives all three of us over to the place where he got his piercing done and springs on us, "Early Merry Christmas" we're getting your piecing. I barely had time for it to register as I walked through the door.

Once inside the nerves hit me as they always do. I have always been a bit needle phobic, so this probably was the best thing to do. No waiting, no building anxiety, just walk in, pick out jewelry, sit down and get it done and over with. I picked out something that would fit my face a nice 14 gauge steel circular barbell, walked into the other room and sat down in the chair.

I think I chatted nervously with the piercer about how long this one would take to heal, how much blood to expect, the usual stuff as they pull out their needle, forceps, gloves, etc. My boyfriend, although pierced himself actually decided to leave the room because he couldn't watch the actual deed so my loving girlfriend at the time stayed to help me remember to breath and to hold my hand through the experience.

The forceps were an interesting sensation to say the least but nothing too bad. Once on I knew this was it, no turning back now. I think I closed my eyes when it was about to happen and bam! It was a shock of pain and it was over. Well it had hurt but not as bad as I had imagined it would be. The only difference from my other experiences was that this one bled a lot so I had to keep my head back while my eyes of their own accord started watering. Once the jewelry was in I still had to keep pressure on it for a bit because it was still bleeding and my eyes refused to stop watering for probably at least 2 or 3 minutes.

My boyfriend finally called back into the room to ask if it was over and then came to check on me upon learning that it was. He was a little bit taken aback by how much blood there was and that my eyes were watering still. I think perhaps he thought I'd take it out on him or something. But after having to explain that yes I was fine and my eyes watering was nothing I could control he seemed to relax a bit.

Finally my eyes dried up and the bleeding stopped and I looked human again – well like a human with a brand spanking new facial piercing. I was very happy once I looked at it. I have to say it's one of the better presents I have gotten for Christmas. I only had one major ouch shortly after getting it done. I was pulling off a tight sports bra after working out and caught the damn thing while still new and damn did that hurt like a bitch. But other than that it was very smooth sailing on the healing. I of course through the years have had it catch on other things or have been hit in the nose with it in and let me say that doesn't feel good but it wasn't nearly as bad as when it was freshly done.

I still have it with the same jewelry and everything. I've tried other types of stuff and always end up back with my original body jewelry. Even if the relationship with that guy did not last more than a few months after this, my piercing and my happiness with it has continued. It was the fastest healing piercing I've gotten to date and it has so much become a part of me that when I do sometimes wear it up inside my nose for some reason, my friends now say I just do not look right with out it being there. I am sure that one day I will start to get that itch again for something new. In fact I have been for a while now and soon I won't be able to put it off any longer. This time though I think I am going to finally break down and get my first tattoo and face my fear again of needles for that all important body modification/self-expression that I seem to need.
