I'd always hated septum piercings until I got onto bmezine (and suicide girls) and saw how pretty it can actually be on girls, with the right jewellery of course, so after moving out and finally being able to get whatever I wanted pierced, I had my lip done at the side, followed swiftly by my madonna, which everyone told me not to do until they saw how pretty it looked. I never thought I would actually get my septum pierced however, a piece of metal out through the middle of my nose? That would be madness! Hover, after browsing bme and being bored of the piercings I already have, I decided I was going to get it done and to hell with what everyone else thought!

Like my madonna, everyone tried to talk me out of having my septum pierced, after a few months or so however, I was determined that I was going to get it done regardless, I mean hey, I could just hide it from the people who didn't want to see it, and if it really did look that bad I could always take it out.

Of course, nobody actually wanted to go with me to the studio and see me have it done (could've done with someone holding my hand though!), so I set out on my own.

So there I was. Ash informed me that they had no retainers, and the piercer wasn't in that day anyway (Si my usual piercer has moved to their Barnsley branch), so I decided I mayaswell head out to buy a retainer myself, so they could autoclave it, and I'd be able to hide my new piercing from my parents and work. It took me forever and I only managed to find one, a teeny looking 1.6mm one, which I wasn't even sure would be big enough.

Next day I gets to the studio (alone again), and we decide that it will be big enough, 'cos the area shouldn't swell too much, so into the dentists chair I get (after cleaning my nose up of course) and I tilt my head back for the clamps. There are a couple of people stood around watching in sick fascination, this isn't the norm for my area, and the piercer had only pierced one before me anyways, the e week before. I don't mind being watched, it makes me a lil braver if I've got to prove to an audience that i'm not a pain freak :)

Clamps on, not too bad i'm thinking, I've got a guy 3cm away from my nose but what the hey I wanted this doing, lets go.

"Deep breath in" *sucks in*, "and out again", I breathed out as slowly as possible as he pushed the needle through. Not too bad, i'm thinking again, my eyes are watering, but it didn't hurt half as much as I thought it would.

Then came the problem. The jewellery was bigger than the canula by about .4mm, "did I want a few minutes to get ready?" did I hell! So again, deep breath in, breathe out slowly and I screamed my head off! That was the kind of pain I was expecting from the needle! But at least now it was through, I wasn't bleeding to death, but I felt like I'd been punched in the nose about a million times. Ouch. After showing all the nosy people in the studio and hearing cries of "ewww" and "what did you want to that for" I paid up and went on my way.

I made the fatal mistake that night of going out and getting horribly drunk, and in my drunken numbness, showing people how it flips up and down, a kind of now you see it now you don't game which amused me and many others but didn't really do the piercing much good. The next morning instead of feeling like I'd been punched in the nose, I felt like I'd been hit in the face by a ten tonne truck. As for swelling, the tip of my nose has turned into a bulb, and I still can't blow my nose without going through agony, it hasn't really crusted and it's totally not noticeable when I flip it up. Hopefully it won't swell up anymore and if I keep taking care of it the retainer will stay ok, it's slightly not straight, but not enough for anyone to notice, though I do keep getting paranoid about keeping the retainer straight! I love it, and I love peoples reactions to it, so for anybody who's thinking about having it done, I'd say go for it (but make sure the piercer checks that the jewellery will fit into the canula!), what's the worst that can happen! I'm hoping to get a cute little circular barbell to put in it when it's healed up, or maybe a funky titanium retainer.
