Right after I turned 18 in the beginning of September, I decided I wanted to do something different with my body. In the past I had done a lot of cutting work myself, some of which I frown upon, but some I love. Also I have pierced a lot myself, including my nipples, ears, and my webbing on my left hand. It was time for a change however, and I wanted something professional this time, not just another half-assed job with a sewing machine needle. I wanted to get a new piercing, something few people had but something not too outlandish that I couldn't hide it around my family (they hate anything non-mainstream).

I called a few places I had heard about from my friends, and decided on one that sounded the best to me. I had the money from my paycheck, so I got on my Fly bike and rode down into the city to A Built To Last. The guy who does the piercing was real cool, he told me about all his piercing and his septum experience. In fact, he had a 00 gauge in his septum and at the time I thought that was really huge. We talked about stretching, but I was just interested in getting it done. The piercing itself wasn't too painful, but my piercer had a hard time getting the last o-ring on the retainer. After my eyes were done watering I rode out to show off my new piercing at the rink, where all my friends hangout to skate and ride bikes and all that good stuff.
Anyway, after a few weeks of healing, I put in some spike rings and such, but I wasn't satisfied with a 14 gauge. Only one other kid at my school had his septum done, but I still wanted to be different, I guess its just how I am. Anyway, I went down to Hot Topic at the mall and picked up some 12 gauge horns and plugs. I expected a lot of pain, but was surprised as the horn went right through. The stretch was very easy, and almost painless.
So in a few weeks I went back with my friend Phil and we put together some cash for a pack of 10g horns. He had a 16g in his lobe, and wanted to start expanding too. I cautioned him about such a big stretch but he wanted to go for it, like the tough guy he is. So we put them in and went out skating for awhile. Phil said it popped a bit, but didn't really hurt too bad. I did not expect pain, since the last expansion hardly hurt. But damn, the 10g hurt for weeks, and was very painful if I didn't clean it once a day or more. When I finally got a stainless barbell for it, the pain started to reside, after damn near a month.
It was getting into December now, and I told Phil since the last stretch hurt so bad, I was going to wait until after New Years to stretch again, but my impenitence won and I went out and bought some 8 gauge horns again. We both stretched and were satisfied with the size, but soon I wanted bigger, and since this particular one did not hurt, I felt I was ready.
We went all out and skated out to the mall on New Years Eve and picked up some 6g horns to celebrate. Phil slid his in and told me it hurt like hell. I was expecting pain, and the girls with us were watching me intently as I pulled the 8g out and prepared myself. Damn did that ever hurt, and getting the o-rings on was a bitch. Hell, my eyes watered almost as much as when I got it pierced. I sneezed for awhile too, something I found I could make myself do on cue, just by pushing the ring against my cartilage. Well I got it all in and straightened it out (my piercing is a bit crooked, so little thought that its almost impossible to notice) and we headed out for some late night skating until new years.
My nose hurt all night, more than the last time, and it is finally starting to feel ok again. But it was worth it, and now I'm sitting here with a new year and a new gauge. I hadn't expected to expand my septum this fast, but I really like how its working out. I'm not sure how big I am going to stretch it too, maybe until I can get a hollow post that will fit a 10 or 8 gauge ring inside. Anyway, Phil and I are going to continue stretching our piercing until satisfied, and I will be proud to sport this 6 out in public, because it really is badass.
