>From practically as long as I can remember I have wanted to get a septum piercing, I'm not too sure what made me want this particular mod it just clicked. After I had my lip and tongue frenum done my septum was next in line.

The night before I was really nervous after hours of web based research on septum; I actually thought I was going to back out of it at one point. But in the morning I was in a different mood and felt much calmer and as the day progressed I was getting more and more excited.
At the end of college I met up with my friend Sadie and we headed down to MetaFlesh. On the bus down I started to feel nervous again but once we where in the studio again I was feeling better, I told the Joe at the desk what I wanted: septum (and I was also getting a nape done). There were quite a few people in the waiting room we talked to the piercers and amongst ourselves for about 20 minuets. Then Rob took Sadie and I down to the "green room" and whilst Rob got the equipment ready, washed his hands and put on gloves I was able to put a CD on (a local band called Hiding With Girls). I felt very relaxed with familiar music. Then Rob asked me if I wanted anaesthetic, I had discussed the pros and cons with him upstairs earlier. I chose to go for anaesthetic because I was still slightly nervous. He also asked me what size I would got for out of 1.6mm or 2.4mm, I went for the 1.6 as I thought I could always stretch it later if I really wanted to.
Rob got out the septum retainer, I haven't really seen one like it before, it looked like a small labret stud with a small black band one end and no thread. The ones I've seen usually look a bit like an open staple. Rob explained that the septum keeper I was going to use was less likely to move around so less likely to have complications. He also sprayed xylocaine (a form of anaesthetic) on two separate cotton buds and wiggled them around inside my nostrils it smelled kind of like bananas. We needed to wait a little while for the anaesthetic to kick into action. When that was done I laid down on my back and curved my neck up like an arch on the piercing bed/ seat kind of thing. Rob stood behind me to get the best access to my septum. He told me to close my eyes as he lined up the needle freehand, after he had felt the best spot to pierce through. Inside my nostrils where very moist because of the anaesthetic so they needed wiping out with a tissue this is to make sure the insertion needle gets enough grip. I felt the needle touch the inside of my nostril, it was a sharp sensation as it made its insertion and another sharp feeling as it exited the septum. By now both my eyes were watering (this is expected with septum a piercing) for some reason I seem to like that sensation. Rob replaced the needle for the septum keeper (I didn't feel that at all). I sat up and went towards the mirror as Rob handed me a paper towel. I could barely see the septum keeper even when I tilted my head back. I remember saying something like "wow, this won't be a problem for hiding at work".
After I had my septum and nape done we went back upstairs, the waiting room was pretty much empty apart from one person then I realised that it was 5:30 (closing time for MetaFlesh). I then paid and thanked Rob for the service and we left. It felt a bit sore immediately afterwards walking about town but nothing too painful.
I got home and showed my parents (not that they could see much anyway), they seemed to be fairly neutral on the idea. I guess they know what to expect of me and in their weird twisted was they understand me. The only person to act negatively to my septum was my younger brother who told me "it's a disgusting piercing". I was too bothered what he thought but I gave him the full "why body modification is good" speech. That shut him up for a bit.
At work the day after no one noticed it so it looks like I'm covered on that one too. Also it wasn't painful after the 1st evening, I could barely feel it.
As soon as I'm able to I'll be inserting new jewellery, probably a horseshoe style ring to begin with. I'll most likely stretch it to a larger gauge, like a 2.4.
It's hard to think of a good reason not to get a septum piercing now that I think about it; it's relatively painless, it can be as discreet or as bold as the wearer wants and is extremely versatile.
