The decision to get my septum pierced was done on a whim. Before my septum I had only the piercings. I had my tongue at an 8 gauge and my ears at 5/8 and for the longest time I decided I was happy with those 3 holes in my body, until recently when I started play piercing. Before play piercing I was deathly afraid of needles. But after a few sessions I found I really enjoyed getting pierced and decided I needed another permanent hole in my body. So after very little thought about it I decided I always thought that septum's had looked cool and wanted to get one of my very own.

Later that week when I had a day off of work I decided I was going downtown to get my septum pierced. So I called up a friend who said that he wanted to watch and drove downtown. After getting a bite to eat (I hate piercing on an empty stomach) my friend and me walked over to big o tattoo to go get my septum done. When we got into the shop the piercer was finishing up a tattoo so we waited around the shop till he was done. Amazingly I had no butterflies at the time. I think this was due to the play piercing sessions diminishing my needle fear so much.

After he was done with the girls tattoo he greeted us and asked me what I wanted to get done. I told him I wanted my septum pierced but it had to be pierced with a retainer or a non-visible type of jewelry, for obvious job reasons. My heart sank when he told me that he had no retainers in stock. So I asked if they had any plugs. He said that they did have plugs but they started at an 8 gauge. I wanted to get my septum done that day so I decided that I would just have it pierced at an 8 and a plug put in.

So he had me come into the back of the shop to the small piercing room. At this point I did start to feel a little bit more nervous about the whole thing since I had originally planned to get it pierced at a much higher gauge. After he had sanitized the area he put on a pair of gloves and felt up inside my nose for the spot he would pierce my septum at. After he had found it he cleaned my nose, marked the spot where the needle would go through and after changing gloves began to get the needle and jewelry ready. By the time I saw what an 8 gauge needle looked like I was pretty intimidated but still not as nervous as my previous piercing (I remember being a whole lot more nervous getting my ears pierced)

After getting everything ready (changing gloves quite a few times as he went) he was ready to perform the piercing. He picked up the receiving tube and the needle and started telling me to breath in and out my mouth slowly. Now that I look back on it I just really noticed for the first time that he did my septum completely freehand. Right before the piercing he told me to take a deep breath in and when I exhaled he pierced it.

And man did it hurt. For about 3 seconds all I could concentrate on was the pain. And then after those 3 seconds the pain stopped. It was still sore and I was in a little pain but nothing to bad. From then on my endorphins kicked in and all I remember was a blur. I do remember the jewelry transfer being a breeze. And the stuff he put on it to clean it stung a little. I also remember having to clean up some blood because it bled pretty well for a while.

After he was all done cleaning it he put a ring inside the plug to make sure that it was straight, and sure enough it was. I took a look in the mirror and was extremely happy with what I saw. I was glad to have my septum.

Now on my 3rd day of healing I am still doing sea salt soaks regularly and am cleaning it with some special soap a friend gave me. Even right after the piercing I went to get a cup of coffee and it barely hurt now three days later I don't even notice it unless I take my shirt off roughly or bump it on something. I also have yet to sneeze with it in so I will have to see what that is like. But after I get it all healed up I plan on stretching it to about a zero gauge and putting a seamless captive bead ring in it and wearing that shit loud and proud!
