Ok...so here I am at 37, wondering what to do next. I've always loved tattoos, but I have quite a few of them and just wanted to do something else. Most of my friends are tattooed and pierced, and I love all the creativity that goes into both. After much consideration, I decided that I wanted to get my nostril pierced. I had always loved the way they look and figured I might as well go ahead and just do it. I read about other's experiences getting their nostril pierced, and found some sites that had info on the background and meanings of the piercing. I looked at hundreds of pictures of the piercing and it looks awesome on everyone. I looked for nose screws and rings that I liked and purchased a few, so I was determined to do this. If I have the jewelry, I have to get the piercing, right?

I headed over to Cincinnati Tattoo on Friday, but they were really busy and Mike came out and said that if I came back the next day he could pierce me for free because the owner would be in. A free piercing? Hell, yes! Would you pass that up? I wasn't about to. Knowing it would be free made me want it even more!
The next day, I headed back over there around noon. No customers were in the shop, so I didn't have to wait. I admit that I was really nervous. My hands were shaking like a leaf! I guess it was just because it was a facial piercing. I've got my ears pierced four times each, and my navel pierced. I also have numerous tattoos, so it's not like this was a new experience. I really wanted it done, though, so I wasn't about to back out.
Mike came out and we talked for a few minutes about it. He showed me the jewelry I could choose from, and I asked him which would be better for the initial piercing. He said that he liked to use a nose screw instead of a ring, so I decided on one with a blue crystal and he headed back to get things ready. A few minutes later he came out and said he was ready. I followed him back and hopped up in the chair. He had a sneezing fit and had to step out of the room for a few minutes, which gave me time to check out the needle. Oh my gods, it looked HUGE! I asked him when he came back in what size it was and he said it was 16g.."tiny" as he put it. HEH! It didn't look tiny to me! I spotted a sign that said "Pain is weakness leaving the body", so I kept saying that over and over to myself. Mike came back in a few minutes later and got started. After putting on some new gloves, he cleaned my nose, inside and out, which is a completely weird experience, then asked me which side I wanted pierced. I had decided on the left. He put a little mark on my nostril and I liked the placement, so he picked up the receiving tube and lined everything up. I was holding onto the sides of the chair so I wouldn't jerk away and totally screw up the piercing. I was terrified that I would move! He told me to take a deep breath and when I let it out he pierced me. Mike is an awesome piercer. He did my navel for me, too. He pushed the needle through with no hesitation, which I'm sure is what made it a good experience. Even though I had done some reading on nostril piercings before getting it done, but I really had no idea what to expect. It really wasn't bad. It did hurt like heck, but only for about 2 seconds, then it was pretty much fine. It felt a little weird when he put the screw in, but it didn't hurt. There was a tiny bit of blood, which he cleaned up after he was done. I looked in the mirror and loved it! It's so cute!
All I've done for aftercare is clean it twice a day with Dial antibacterial soap, and have had no problems at all. It's healed completely, amazingly fast. I've already changed the jewelry in it, and I'm so happy with it! My mother didn't even freak out when she saw it, and she's super-conservative. If you're thinking about getting your nostril pierced, read up on it, decide which side you like best, and then find a piercer who knows what they're doing...and go for it! You'll love it.
