I love the way small-gauged septum piercings look, so I decided to get mine done. It was a very easy experience and this is a piercing for everyone. I thought about it for a few weeks just to make sure it wasn't a fleeting notion, and when I discovered it wasn't, I decided to stop deliberating and go ahead and get it done.

I went to a studio that my friend got pierced at once before, and everything looked clean. The staff was friendly and I got an overall good vibe from the place. After I paid for my jewelry and service, it was time to pierce. I had my friend with me and we followed the piercer into the room. I noticed she took the needle from a sterile individual package and had everything laid out and had latex gloves on. The room looked immaculately clean.

My piercer told me it was a blind piercing, meaning she wouldn't try to mark where she was going to go through. Which is fine. It's inside your nose. She also mentioned she had done a lot of these and was pretty good. She really seemed professional and I was very excited to have her piercing me.

She gave me a tissue to get any boogs out of the way. She then put some bactine on a q-tip and swabbed the inside of my nose throughly. She mentioned that bactine numbs it a tiny bit, as well as makes the area free of germs.

Then the needle went in. I got pierced with a 14g, and it sort of stunned me when the needle went through. It hurt quite a bit, but after she put the retainer in, it was numb. I walked around a little dazed for a while. The whole piercing didn't even take a minute. It was over that quick.

After that I couldn't feel it. The next day when I woke up I was sitting in my bed and I thought "What did I do yesterday?" and then I remembered my septum... only I didn't feel anything in my nose and that startled me. I was thinking it had fallen out. But it hadn't. It was still there... but it was pretty much painless unless I touched it too much.

Now I've had it for a week and it feels healed. I soak it in a hot sea salt solution for five minutes a day, and apply bactine every now and again when I'm thinking about it. I'm wearing the retainer because I don't want just anybody knowing about it (like my grandma, who is helping me get through school, who wouldn't appreciate it) but I can pull it down when I want to. I go to a cosmetology school that has a pretty strict dresscode and I have to wear it flipped up while I'm in class. But it hasn't been a problem at all. It's kind of nice having a facial piercing you can hide. The only problem is, this makes me want more piercings, like a marilyn and a vertical labret, which aren't as easily hidden. But we'll see how the future plays out. :)

The thing that I like the most about this piercing is how quickly it is healing. I can move it around and do whatever and it doesn't really bother me. I've heard people say that their eyes water whenever they touched their septum before it was completely healed, but that hasn't happened to me. Occasionally it feels really dry, and that's when I soak it for a while to loosen up any crust and gross stuff that might be on it. A lot of people told me that septum piercings are one of the crustiest, but I haven't really had a problem with mine being overly crusty. I just try to keep it as clean as possible without irritating it.

They say it is definitely healed in 8 weeks and you can change the jewelry and I think I'm going to get a silver circular barbell for when I go out. But you can get spikes and tusks and a bunch of other jewelry for it, which makes it interesting.

This is an excellent piercing. I recommend it to anyone. It looks cute as hell, you can hide it if you need to, and you can wear a variety of jewelry with it.

I've seen other stories with people worrying about inhaling their jewelry. I've also seen people worried about the piercing going through their cartilage (if the piercer you are going to tells you he or she is going to pierce through your cartilage , RUN AWAY!). I've seen all kinds of concerns about septum piercings and I think those fears are unfounded. Everything is completely fine. It's as easy as pie.

So what are you waiting for. Go. Get your septum pierced. Now!

DO IT!
