First of all, I'd like to give some you some background on myself. My name is Des Martinez, I am 18, I am in law school (wooohooo), I plan on becoming a human/civil rights lawyer. I have only 2 facial piercings, but I've become more and more fascinated by play piercing and suspension. I had huge fuckin back piece done on my 18th birthday of a cartoon Muay Thai fighter, and luckly I had a good artist. I had been satisfied with my tattoo until I realized that I really needed a little sumthin sumthin to perk me up.

Shortly over a month ago, after a night of no sleep and quite a few financial setbacks, I had felt as if everything I had been taking on was way too much. I decided I had needed something new, something fresh, something I could focus on other than college and work. I looked briefly at some of the septum photos on bmezine, a exhaled a deeply held breath... anxiety... I had never gotten pierced before and I could feel the fear resting inside my body.

I have always wanted my septum spiked since I was 12. I was walking around the mall with my mommy when I saw "one of those guys" with a huge septum tusk, and from that moment on, I knew I had to get something shoved through that little cartilage flap, preferably a huge fuckin needle. I knew it was going to hurt, and my friend Winston, who currently resides in Kansas City, had already tried to talk me out of it because "it fuckin hurts you too bad"... yeah Winston... it hurts you too bad.

I was surprisingly calm when I approached my favorite headshop/body mod establishment, Freaky's. When I walked in, I was with my friend Danny, and to tell you the truth, he was wound-up even worse than I. I told the guy behind the counter what I wanted pierced, and he asked me what gauge... ummmm... "I don't know" I told him, and he took me to the piercer, Eddie. Eddie looked at my nose and said "well, we'll probably do it at a 12, and if you wanna stretch it out later, then you can." My jaw dropped. Fuck that. A 12 gauge? I told him that something that small wasn't really something I was looking for, and he asked me to wait in the studio. Eddie stepped out of the room, and while he was gone I was snooping around, checking to see if everything really was as clean as it looked. It was an impressive setup that he had, barbells and cbrs and horseshoes filled a gigantic tackle box, and he had huge bunches of individually packaged needles, none as big as I would have liked them to be. When Eddie came back, he held in his hand an 8 gauge horseshoe and what seemed like a huge fuckin needle. I told him that the 8 gauge would be sufficient, and he told me to go smoke a cigarette while the jewelry was being sterilized.

I smoked my cigarette, and spoke with a guy who also had his septum done at a 10 gauge, and stretched currently to an 8 gauge. The guy had tons of tribal tattoos on his face, and various other works which he was showing to me. He told me that his septum was probably the most painful art he had gotten done. shit. I was starting to get waves of anxiety all throughout my legs and feet. When I re-entered the piercing studio, Eddie had gathered a small crowd to come watch my pain. He asked me to lay down on the chair/bed thingy, and he stood above my face. He marked my septum with a toothpick and what looked to be tattoo ink, and began to get ready for the big moment. My friend Danny says that you could see my heart thumping against my rib cage and the fear in my eyes. Eddie once again stood above my face, placed the needle skillfully on my septum and said he'd push on 2 ... One... two... the needle was in, the jewelry was in faster, and I was on my way out in 5. The ring looks great in my septum, and the wound has completely healed by now. The worst part was the soreness that followed 2 days after, which was almost tolerable with asprin and whatnot, and other than that, there was little to no pain. Occasionally, when I step out in the cold, I can feel little freezing icy thingies in my nose, but I have yet to experience a true pain. I later went back to Eddie and got a 6 gauge shoved through my lip, but hey, that's another story.
