When It just happened
Artist Pierre
Studio Black Sun
Location Montreal, Quebec
My background:

I have been harbouring a desire to get my septum pierced since I was 15 years old. It appealed to me immensely because I could hide it and the piercing didn't have to go through cartilidge. When I hit 18 years of age, I went around various studios inquiring information but they said that my nose was small and that they didn't have a retainer/circular barbell short enough in length for me to be able to flip it up into my nose. (I need to hide it from my parents and for future career reasons)

The studio:

When I moved to Montreal from B.C., I decided to pop by Black Sun. I have read great recommendations by pierced people about it. It may as well be one of the top studios in Montreal. The studio was unlike the ones I've been to. There was no deafening rock music playing, nor that sound of people being tattooed. But then again, Black Sun is only a piercing studio, I don't think you can get tattoos done there. Anyways, the place is very (!) clean. It is like a clinic. I made an appointment with the very friendly receptionist. She was so very patient and answered all the questions I asked her thoroughly. I knew this was the place that I would go to now and forever for future piercings as long as I'm in Montreal. If you are thinking about getting something pierced, please DO go check out Black Sun.

The piercing:

Finally, my appointment! It was at 5:45PM on Friday. I was excited. However, I didn't want to get my hopes up too high because I was afraid that I would be told again that they didn't have jewellry short enough for me to flip up. After filling in forms (in a waiting room with a fish tank with beautiful fish), Pierre the piercer came and sit with me for awhile in the waiting room. He told me abit about the septum piercing and answered my questions I had for him thoroughly. He made me feel so comfortable. We went into the piercing room and I sat on a chair that is like the dentist's. Pierre marked my septum. He asked me if I was stressed out. It is emphasized strongly at Black Sun that they never want you to get a piercing on impulse or when you are emotionally/physically/mentally strained. See how professional they are?

Pierre was going to pierce me with a 14G (I told him I wanted it to look feminine, so he ruled out the 12G) circular horseshoe barbell.

He put the receiving tube on one side of my septum and held the needle on the other side. He told me to take a deep breath in, and when I started exhaling, Pierre pushed the needle through, steadily. IT HURT, but the pain wasn't unbearable. I've read experiences on BMEzine that people's eyes watered like crazy. Mine didn't and I was surprised. Pierre made sure that I was doing o.k. before putting in the jewellry. After that initial pain when the needle went through my septum, there was no pain. It didn't hurt when Pierre left the needle through my septum while he got the jewellry ready, nor did it hurt when he put the jewellry in or when he flipped it up into my nose for me! I was sitting there really tensed up, waiting for that sharp jolt of pain to hit my nose but it never came. You can't see the jewellry at all when it's flipped up. However, from one side, you can see a little bit of it if you look up into my nose. But when I'm talking to people, I don't think that they w ill be looking up my nostrils if they don't know that I have my septum pierced, so it's all good. I think the piercing might be a little crooked, but it's not very noticeble. Pierre made it very clear to me that septum piercings can come out crooked. Pierre went through the aftercare with me. The piercing was about $80, including jewellry. The adrenaline rush was incredible. This was a fantastic way to start off my weekend!

After:

My nose got abit sore later that night... and it was running a little (which lubricated the piercing, so it was all right) because I had been walking outside in the cold. I cleaned it with Baxedin before I went to bed.

It is now the morning of the next day and I cleaned the piercing again with Baxedin when I woke up. There was a little blood and it is a little tender.

OVERALL:

The septum piercing was less painful than I had thought it would be. However, the pain factor varies for different people. I am so happy that I finally got it done. It's a personally refreshing experience. If you are thinking of getting something pierced, make sure that you have thought it thoroughly and clearly (which I did for 3 years...) Do lots of research. Getting pierced should be a positive experience, and for me, the septum piercing was definitely one!
