OK, so it was the last day of finals during my sophomore year in college, and for some reason all I could think about was getting my septum pierced. I had wanted to get it done for a really long time, but I figured that was probably the last piercing I would ever get, since I heard that it was quite painful to get. The first person I ever saw with one was my cousin's wife, and it looked really cool, and ever since I have been intrigued by them. I had been talking to a few of my friends for a little while, asking those that had the piercing how much it hurt, how long it took to heal, etc. But it was this day when I decided to go ahead and do it.

I got home from school and told my friend who lives with me that I wanted to go get it done. So we go over to his girlfriend's house and talk to her for a little bit, since she had done it herself a while back, and I talked to her about it. She didn't really help my nerves any, but I at least felt that I was more informed. She told me that we should go to Koolsville in Anaheim to get it done, since she had had good experiences with them in the past. So I was like, ok, sounds good, lets go. So we get there, and the whole way over I was complaining. I was like, "I'm gonna die, it's gonna get infected and its gonna rot my brain away." I was just being a sissy, but that's what I do. My friends were like, "Dude shut up, you're not gonna wuss out." So we get in there, and I talk to the piercer who was there (forgot her name, sorry) and I told her that I wanted to get my septum done. She told me that it was $40 with a retainer or $50 with a circular barbell. I was thinki ng about getting the retainer, but I talked to her and she told me a story about how when she first got her septum pierced her retainer fell out in her sleep and she had to get it repierced the next day. I really only wanted to have to do this once, so I went ahead and got the CBB. I went to the liquor store next door to use the ATM and got the cash, came back, and they made me give them my ID and sign a bunch of stuff. It was very professional. I was talking to the piercer and she said something like, "The septum is a really good piercing. Not the least painful, but it looks really good." That did little to calm my fears, but I was committed to doing this, so I went ahead into the piercing room.

I sat down on the chair, which was like a vinyl dentist chair with a white leopard print, and I started to get real nervous. I grabbed onto the bottom of the chair to brace myself, and I closed my eyes so I wouldn't see the needle or anything. I guess I zoned out a bit, because the dude that was helping the piercer said something to me and I didn't respond, and he was like "You OK, dude?" I was fine, just getting into my own little zone. So the chick started marking me up with the piercing marker to make sure the piercing would be straight. She didn't use clamps, which surprised me, but I guess it was easier without them for her. So finally (was only like 5 minutes, but it felt like an eternity) she got the needle ready and told me to take a deep breath and bam! I felt the needle blast through my septum. I'm not gonna lie, it hurt, but not intolerably so. It was kinda weird because I could feel it passing through, almost as if it was in slo-mo. My eyes hardly watered at this point, which was surprising to me. Then she started to put the jewelry through, and I jumped back and yelped. It seems that the ring is threaded, and putting threaded metal through brand new wounds is quite painful. That made my eyes start to water really bad. She almost didn't get the ring in because I jumped, but she got it and it was all good. It's been about 2 months, and I've since stretched it from 14 gauge to 12 gauge. I will probably go up to like 8 or 6 gauge eventually, but I wanna take my time with it. All in all, it was a good experience, in that I learned that I'm not too big of a wuss to go through with stuff, even if I do complain a lot about it. The healing was very easy. It really didn't hurt at all, just a bit of crust for about a month or so. It only bled one time, when I was fiddling with the ring when I was bored, but I still have no clue why it started bleeding. It didn't hurt or anything, just started bleeding quite copiously. But since then it has been fine. I recommend getting one, it only hurts f or a second and then you have a hole in your head for the rest of your life :)
