So there I was, standing in my shower, dripping wet, covered with soap with a 4ga. taper through my septum.

I got this brilliant idea to stretch my septum one day about six months ago. I had very quickly stretched it up to a 6ga. acrylic hoop very soon after I got it pierced, that was easy, the tissue was still very soft from the initial piercing. I look back on that with regret but that's another story all together.

On with the show... It was an early morning and I was home alone. I was getting ready to go meet with some friends for a late lunch. I was grabbing my shower stuff when I decided to grab different plugs for my ears, when I came across my 4ga. taper and a 4ga. stainless steel hoop that I had from when I stretched my lobes. This hoop was the heaviest piece of jewelry I owned; I don't know what made me think it would be good for my septum. I grabbed some A&D ointment and off to the shower I went.

I drew my water and jumped in. I shampooed my hair and let the hot water splash against my face. I rinsed the shampoo out of my hair and proceeded to apply some A&D to my taper. I pushed it about half way in right away, that was easy, but I still had a long way to go.

I let the taper kind of just chill where it was while I finished scrubbing down. I could feel some pressure building up so I figured it was now or never or later, whatever. I took some deep breaths and gave the taper a good stiff push. AAHHH!!! It's in and it hurts. "Well at least I'm not bleeding," I thought to myself, which would have defeated the shower all together. With the taper in my nose I rinsed off and hopped out of the shower.

I stood in front of the mirror for like five minutes just staring at what I had accomplished. There I was, naked with a taper just sticking out of my nose and I didn't even know if I could get the jewelry in on my own. I opened the hoop and washed it in the bathroom sink. I held the hoop up to the taper and took a long deep breath. I got as close to the mirror as I could so I could see what I was about to do. With a 1,2,3...push, the hoop was in.

So there I am, in the bathroom, soaking wet, naked, freezing, with a giant 4ga. hoop through my septum. I grabbed my towel and dried myself off being careful not to bump my new septum ring. It was a bit sore. I ran to my bedroom to get dressed, I noticed right then that this was going to be a problem.

This hoop was huge I'm telling you. It had to weigh like five pounds at least. Ok maybe not quite five pounds but it was heavy nonetheless. I got dressed being cautious not to catch my ring on my shirt. I went back to the bathroom to brush my teeth, grabbed my acrylic 6ga. and I was out the door.

I drove into town to my friends' house. I walked in to be greeted by dropped jaws. Everyone was pretty shocked at my new ring. That's when I noticed that it was throbbing pretty badly. This ring was heavy. I went to the bathroom to see if it looked ok. It really hurt. My friends and I headed out to go get some food.

Upon returning from our lunch date my whole face was throbbing. I had to get this ring out. I went to the bathroom, wet down a washcloth and held it on my face hoping that the cold water would make it feel a little bit better, it didn't. I had to make a decision right there. Do I take the ring out or do I suffer longer with the hope that it would be better tomorrow.

I took the ring out and replace it with my acrylic 6ga. I felt like I had lost ten pounds in my head. My septum was still sore but the pressure was gone. I walked out in the living room of my friends' house to show them what I had done. They all said that they liked the 6ga. better anyway. It's been six months since that happened. My septum is nicely healed. I have since dropped down to a 10ga. circular barbell. I want to get back up to a 4ga. someday but this time it will be a slower process. I love my septum piercing. To anyone out there who wants to stretch before it's time I have this advice. DON'T... It hurts. Oh...and lighter is sometimes better. I love heavy jewelry but wait until your piercing is good and tough before you go and hang something huge and heavy from it. By the way, my septum piercing rocks. It was the best piercing decision I have made.
