My septum was the first piercing I had done that I didn't pierce myself. This was something that was special to me, so I wanted to make sure I went to someone I could trust. I was familiar at the time with only a handful of the employees at HTC Phoenix, so I went on a recommendation of my then girlfriend to be pierced by Kristian. I instantly recognized his name and knew that I'd be in good hands.

We entered the shop and it was bright and clean and had a very friendly atmosphere. I was a little nervous, but that was just because nobody had ever pierced me before. After filling out all of the paperwork, I spoke with Kristian and let him know that I wanted to do my septum as large as I could start. I had always liked the look of large septums. I didn't want it dermal punched, so we agreed that he could pierce me at eight gauge and then taper straight away to a six gauge. He told me that I should avoid the circular barbells at first because the weight would be too much and would prolong healing. He also told me that a captive bead ring at six gauge would be hard to open and close and could cause some unneeded stress on the piercing while inserting the jewelry. So, we agreed on a cherry bomb, which is basically a circular barbell with a rounded off end instead of a bead on one side.

Once everything was ready, his apprentice asked if he could watch the procedure and I allowed him. They both made me feel very comfortable. Kristian had me sit down on the chair facing him so that he could make the correct alignment. He cleaned the area that he would be piercing and handed me two kleenexes in case I teared up, as many people do. He explained the entire procedure to me and had me breathe in through my nose and out through my mouth. Everyone had told me how much this was going to hurt and I really prepared myself for the worst. I was expecting the worst pain of my life.

He placed the receiving tube and needle into place and had me take a deep breath in. As I exhaled, he passed the needle through my septum. My eyes did water, but it was only a reaction. It wasn't as a result of pain. In fact, I kinda liked the way it felt. It just slid right through my septum and the cold steel had a great sensation that I had never really experienced before. I took a look in the mirror to make sure I was happy with placement. I was really happy to have finally done it, and would have been happy to go home with just a needle in my septum.

But, I wiped the tears from my face and he sat me back down and tapered to the six gauge. Now, that taper was actually a little uncomfortable. It pinched in a way that is hard to explain. It was as if my septum was being pinched in every direction. I could feel the pressure, but it still wasn't what I would call painful. He finished transferring the jewelry and put the bead on. His hands worked really quickly and his movements were incredibly smooth. He made sure that I wasn't dizzy or light headed before allowing me to take another look in the mirror. I was really very happy with the way it turned out.

It was something I had always wanted and it felt as if a part of me had been put back into place. A part of me that I always knew was missing. I wanted to make sure that I never had to lose this new piece of me, so I paid attention to every little detail of the after care and I followed it as closely as possible. During the after care, I noticed a few things that you might want to look out for that a lot of people don't tell you.

The first thing I realized was that a lot of movement can create soreness. Now, I don't mean moving the jewelry with your hands. Everyone knows not to do that. What I mean is any action that causes your body to shake or bounce. For instance, I rode my bike to work everyday and couldn't figure out why it was so sore even though I was doing sea salt soaks everyday. I eventually realized the problem and ended up removing the bead and flipping the jewelry up into my nose while I rode my bike. I personally would suggest healing with a retainer because the weight of a bead or beads can cause further stress to the piercing.
