This is the story of my septum. Once upon a time (about a year ago), I thought that septum piercings were the most beastly unattractive things I'd ever seen. I couldn't imagine that getting a needle shoved through that part of my face would ever be something I would obsess over. Anyway, as the story goes, after about 11 months of looking at pics on bme I realized that I had fallen madly in love with the "most beastly unattractive" thing I'd ever seen. I couldn't stop thinking it. So, it had to be done.

I guess I'd heard too many horror stories saying it was the most painful piercing you can get, or that they were all too often done crooked... either way I was a little hesitant.
Anyway, being the way I am I went to get it done anyway, regardless of my worries. So I headed over to chronic tattoo where I had my eyebrow pierced when I was 18, and where I had my tongue done a month ago.
I walk into the place with my cousin Jason (no way I was driving home afterward). We kill a little time looking at jewelry while waiting for Brian (the piercer) to get finished doing a navel. While we wait, one of the tattoo artists' comes out and asks what I'm getting done, I said "septum", you know, cause that's what I was getting done and he hands me the forms to fill out.
So now that the navel is done, Brian comes out and says it'll be a couple minutes while he cleans the room. And now I'm getting nervous... about ten minutes pass and I'm pacing like a madman. I was never this nervous for a piercing. Hehehe. I guess my nervousness was so noticeable that this girl (some really cute girl covered in tattoos, just the way I like 'em) comes up and offers me some vicadin. Normally I might have said yes but for some reason I was really trying to be hardcore that day, and I passed on the vicadin (good decision)...
Finally the room is clean and Brian says it's time. My cousin asks if it's okay if he comes in but Brian says it will be just me and him (which I was cool with). We go in and I sit down on the same table I sat on when my tongue was pierced. Brian washes his hands, puts on gloves, and starts getting all the "instruments of mod" ready and asks me if I have any question. By this point I am so nervous that I start asking the dumbest questions I can imagine... questions like: "will it hurt?" He then tells me to lay back and let my head hang off of the table (this was actually pretty comfortably). He tells me that he is going to find the "sweet spot" with a taper and he starts poking around my nose, which is probably one of the strangest feelings you can imagine. After he finds the spot, he marks it and tells me to sit up so all the blood isn't rushing to my head.
Now is the time. I lay back... (just imagine creepy music playing here). I feel him place the receiving tube up against one said and the needle up against the other. He tells me to breathe in real slowly and then exhale. As I exhaled, I felt the strangest feeling I've ever felt... it was pain, but not at all like I was expecting. It hurt less then my tongue did, but it was so much more textured. I noticed every layer of tissue the needle passed through... and then
it was done. My very own septum piercing.
Now this is the part that I was originally the most afraid of, going through all of the pain, just to have the piercing be crooked... but when he told me to look in the mirror, it was perfect. It looked amazing. Brian asked if I was okay, snapped some pics of my new septum piercing and we paid. I ended up giving him like a $20 dollar tip (which he totally deserved)...
It's been about a week now since I got pierced, and I haven't had any problems with it whatsoever. I haven't even had any pain flipping up my circular barbell thing for work. Nothing less then amazing.
So, if you are thinking about getting your' septum done, make sure you go to a piercer you trust... and just remember, if it's done right, it only hurts for a minute...
