I always find where to start a story one of the most difficult things to decide as it is sometimes hard to pinpoint when you first had the idea. As far as I know it was just after I had my tongue pierced for the second time and I just asked my then piercer if it would be possible to to do a nose piercing that went all the way through straight from one side to the other. He said that as far as he knew it hadn't been done before and he wouldn't do it anyway, so I sort of filed it in my mind as an impossible dream and left it at that.
A couple of years and many other piercings later,I was at Ozzfest 2000 in Milton Keynes and decided to have my nose pierced both sides instead of what I now know is called a high nasallang. So just after the start of Soulflys' set I went and had it done to jumpdaf**k up, one of my favourite tracks of all time. As I made my way back into the crowd I was on such a high thinking that this was as close to my dream as I would get when I spotted someone else in the crowd who had a couple of spikes protuding from each side of the nose, so obviously the dream piercing that I had thought, up until then, was impossible.
I remember enjoying the rest of the gig but mostly I was looking forward to seeing my new piercer as soon as possible, too see if he had heard of the procedure, and if he had was he willing to perform it on me.
Early the following week I went down to the studio to ask if it could be done. As luck would have it when I got there there was already a dicussion about a video my piercer had seen at the weekend which contained footage of a man having the procedure done on him. The video sounded a bit ominous as the man was prepared by being stapped into a chair with a head restraint to stop him moving once the procedure had started, then as the needle started to do its' work his eyes flew open in pain and it became clear why he had been strapped down.
At this point my mind was working overtime knowing it had been done and my impossible dream was another step closer to reality, when my piercer said how he would like to try this piercing, as he hadn't done it before, and would as soon as he found someone mad enough to have it done. I immediately volunteered my services as the piercee as long as I could listen to Jumpdaf**kup as it was being done. He agreed and I made an appointment for a couple of weekends later as there were some people other than those in the studio that would like to see it being done and they would take a while to arrange. I left the studio buzzing and already looking forward to achieving one of my dreams.
For the next couple of weeks I seemed to spend more time at the studio talking about my nasallang than I spent at work and home combined.A few people tried to talk me out of it as they had now seen the video and the general consensus was that I must be nuts to want something that appeared to be so painful, but both myself and my piercer were looking forward to this too much to back out, not that anyone could have persuaded either of us to do that anyway. I felt like a kid again waiting for my Birthday or Christmas.
When the day finally arrived I felt as if I floated down to the studio rather than walked, not because I had been drinking or anything but just on a natural high with all the exitement that had been building up for the last couple of weeks. However, when I got into the studio there was only my piercer looking disappointed. he explained that his second couldn't be there to hold my head in case I moved so with a heavy heart we postponed for another two weeks too make doubly sure everyone that needed to be there would be.
Up until this point it had seemed to me that this had all fallen into place a little too easily, but what was a couple more weeks waiting when until two weeks previous I had thought it would never happen. Again I spent much of the ensuing time in the studio, the anticipation even more intense than the first time.
Before I knew it it was mid-afternoon on Saturday and I found myself outside the studio again feeling a strange mixture of euphoria and trepidation. I got in there to find about ten people ready to watch and my piercer more nervous than I had ever seen him. I went back outside with a few others to have a cigarette and to give both myself and my piercer time to calm down. My head was so clear and relaxed now that all the waiting was finally over and very soon my dream was going to be realized.
I went back into the studio with others coming in as they finnished smoking, both my piercer and myself ready to start. First off he put the dots on my nose with everyone saying if they thought it was straight or not. When I was happy with their placement I relaxed back into the chair, the second gently put his hands on my forehead and someone else turned the stereo up. Time then seemed to become completely irrelevant as all I became concious of was the music, the clamps on my nose and my piercer asking me if I was ready.
I nodded gently and shut my eyes as he lined the needle up, its hard to find the words to explain how I felt at this point other than I was on the verge of going to sleep but being more alive than ever before. I felt the needle go through in one smooth motion and it seemed as though it took at least thirty seconds while at the same time no time at all. I opened my eyes and watched the rest of the procedure as it went on right in front of my eyes, still no feelings of conventional pain, just a feeling of having had an extremely intense experience.
About a minute after the balls had been attatched to my latest mod one side of my nose started to bleed copiously which worried my piercer but all I wanted to do was get up and have a look in a mirror then go and have another smoke. About an hour after that the bleeding finally stopped during which time I was babbling on about how good it felt, thanking everyone involved and finding out from the second who had been holding my head that I hadn't flinched at any point during the procedure. No-one could belive how calm I had seemed to be about the whole thing, expecting a reaction more like the one in the video.
Later on I touched one side (I know you're not supposed to touch new piercings for hygiene reasons but I couldn't resist), and wobbled it to see how it felt. I was glad I was already sitting down as the rush started at my nose, went up over my head making all the hairs stand up, all the way to my hands and feet. A better feeling than any chemically induced rush I have ever felt. This didn't start to fade until Monday evening when I got home from work. I went straight down to the studio to have chat, thank everyone again and tell them about the rushes I had been enjoying all weekend.
It took almost a week to come down after what has to be my favourite piercing experience so far on the road I am travelling. All I can say is that I have since found out about BME so that I can read other peoples stories and share mine with you. Thanks for taking the time to read this and I hope it encourages others to follow their dreams.
