I had got my labret pierced about a week prior or so, and it was time to get my jewelry changed out. While I was getting my labret stud changed out, I decided it was time for a new hole as well. I had looked through my pierces portfolio a few times, trying to decide what my next hole would be. I had thought about an ear project, or vertical nipples to accompany my horizontal ones. Finally I saw he had some 10ga septum retainers in his show case. That was it, I would get my septum done, with a retainer.

After deciding on my septum, I asked him endless questions about his. Like does it hurt, how long does it take to heal, how long can you leave it out, etc.

We talked for a few more minutes, and I told him it was time for a new hole. He asked what I wanted done, and I told him "I want my septum pierced." He started to joke with me like " Nah you don't want that done, it hurts real bad", just messing with me trying to psych me out. He asked me what jewelry I wanted it done with, and at the time I was living with my grandparents, so I decided it had to be something I could hide. So I told him I wanted it done with a retainer. He looked in his case and told me he had the 14ga retainer and the 10ga retainer. I thought for a minute and figured it was going to either be painful or not, it didn't really matter what gauge. So I told him I wanted the 10ga. He just got a shit eating grin after that.

He went back into his room to start prepping the needle etc. After he got it all clean and ready, he called me back to his room. I took a seat in the chair. He washed his hands, then put his gloves on. He proceeded to stick both his index fingers in my nose, one up each side, and feel around for the "sweet spot". A part of the nose where the is not so much cartilage, where it is good to pierce. He found it and told me I had a big sweet spot, and my septum would be an easy piercing to stretch later on down the line. So after all the poking and prodding in my nose, he changed gloves again. Then pulled an alcohol pad out and put that up my nose to clean it. All that alcohol right in my nose did not smell very good at all. After it was all clean, he looked a bit more, and made a mark as to where he was going to pierce at.

He asked me if I was already. I was. He grabbed his clamps, which were a pair designed specifically for a septum piercing, I suppose. There was like two tubes welded to the end of the clamps, to where the needle could go through. He put the rubber band around the clamp, and put it onto my nose. Then took it back off. He said it was too tight. I agreed. He then proceeded to put the clamps back on, adjusting them, moving them all around, which was very uncomfortable. After getting it all adjusted he reached back for his needle. Damn that looked big, but it was what I asked for. He put the needle up into the clamp and looked around a bit more, making sure all was lined up. He told me to breathe in through my nose, and out through my mouth. At this point in time I was getting a bit nervous. Then on the last exhale he pushed the needle through. Painless. It didn't hurt one bit. I was happy, but as I've come to learn over my past piercing experiences, its not the piercing that's so bad, its getting the jewelry in. At this point in time it was painless and my eyes didn't even water one bit. Then came the jewelry transfer. That needle jiggled just the slightest bit as he was doing the transfer, and my eyes just let out massive amounts of tearing. Finally the jewelry was through, and it was almost done. He had me sit in the chair for a minute or two just to make sure I was fine. After I told him I was good to go, he told me to go check it out in the mirror. I liked it, though it was only a retainer. I already wanted to change the jewelry out. But had to wait a bit for that. We went over the after care, I paid him and was on my way.

Its been about a month or so, and I've had no problems really. Just every once in a while it will get a bit irritated and make my eyes water a bit. But other than that there's been no problems. I have changed the jewelry out a couple of times, but fount that the retainer is the most comfortable in my septum right now, due to its still healing. To anyone thinking about getting it done, I suggest getting it done, go for it if you want it done. If you are worried about hiding it, the retainers are completely invisible. No one has seen my septum unless I show them or tell them I have it done.
