Usually your 19th birthday isn't a big celebration...maybe a party with friends, dinner with family, a mix of both...you save the big bangs for 18 and 21. I've wanted a tongue ring since I was about 15 or 16, and there was no way I would've gotten it then, my mom would have my hide. I said I'd wait til I was 18, but seeing as how I was home so much even though I was in college and I got a tattoo and had to scrape up savings for that. Not to mention that my mom kept hounding me about my diabetes every time I mentioned some kind of body modification. I've had Type 2 diabetes for almost 9 years now, and there were a few years it was out of control but I got it back to where I was first diagnosed. I understand all the consequences of high blood sugars, and how the body/immune system acts compared to people without diabetes so I won't heal as quickly or as well as other people. After another one of her forever and a day speeches, I decided to put it off until further notice. I moved down here to Huntsville and thought about getting it done soon as possible, but I thought I should wait until I started back at school to get it, so I wouldn't be around my mom so much.

I celebrated my birthday last week and I was well intent on getting my tongue pierced that very day! But I had to have a family dinner, and had to get financially situated first. So I put it off and on Tuesday, me and my suitemate decided to get pierced up! I was getting my tongue and I persuaded her to go ahead and get her stomach done like she wanted to. We went to the bank to get some cash and I drove to a place no more than 5-8 minutes away from our dorm, Kreations Tattoo and Piercing. I'd gone there when I moved down and visited 6 more places between here and Decatur, and I found Kreations to be the most sanitary, the most friendly, had the best and fairest prices, excellent jewelry options, and they're the epitome of professional.

We got there around 4:30 and I talked to Adam, since the co-Owner Kristi was doing a tattoo (which btw, her skills her kick ass!!). I had talked to him earlier that day and told him I'd be back, and me and the roomie filled out the necessary paperwork. After fighting bout it in the car and more at the studio, I went first. I rinsed out with mouthwash, sat down in a dental-like chair while he patted my tongue dry and he checked and marked my tongue to make sure he could pierce it well and that the marks were straight. He took all the equipment out of its packaging, wore gloves the entire process, and changed them before he actually pierced my tongue. After drying the tongue he put the clamps on, and told me to take a deep breath. Now, I'm a punk sometimes and make a lot of noise, which kinda freaked out my roommate, but in actuality it didn't hurt that bad. He pierced from the bottom to the top, which was cool and I'd heard of some piercers doing it that way. He inserted the jewelry, screwed the top ball on, had me rinse out with mouthwash again, and I was done! It took all of 5 or 10 minutes from start to finish, and he gave me aftercare procedures and I paid for everything.

It's now Thursday and I'm doing very well far as I'm concerned. I was hoping that it'd act like my two tattoos I have, in which I had absolutely no complications with those. Considering that I'm also a diabetic, he explained to me that it may take longer to heal but usually the healing process is the same length as normal people, but when I told him bout the tats he figured I would be fine. I experienced some swelling a few hours afterwards, but it wasn't a lot. I ate ice for hours afterwards, and I'm following the aftercare procedures, and I'm doin fine. I use listerine (50-50 dilution with water, cuz it's a bit strong to me) when I brush my teeth and after all food/drink touches my mouth, brush twice a day including the jewelry GENTLY, I tighten it once a day, and in the morning and night I use gly-oxide, which helps with any additonal swelling or pain. I'm able to eat regular foods; I'm staying away from spicy foods tho, I just have to chew small bites and slowly so it doesn't knock against the ring too much. It honestly only hurt when the needle went in, a few minutes after, when I eat a lot, or accidentally bump it with my teeth. So don't let your condition or nerves hold you back! Just be careful, use common sense, follow the rules, and do your research. I love this piercing and I plan on keeping it for life...just can't let my mom know for a few years...or 10! I plan on goin back for an ear piercing, and to let them touch up the tattoo I got over Christmas break. I highly recommend them and the new piercing I got!!
