So about 3 months ago I decided I was going to go against my parent's wishes and get my tongue pierced. I went with a few friends to try and calm my nerves. It was $45 including the jewelry. Ok so on to the experience. It's pretty nerve racking, for me it was at least. A lot of people think that a tongue piercing would hurt so badly because biting on your tongue hurts like hell. But biting your tongue is totally different from getting it pierced. Your teeth are not sharp they are rigid and blunt. The piercing needle is very sharp and glides right through. So I hope that calms some people down a little. I sat on the table and had to rinse my mouth out with some mouth stuff, it might have been Biotene but i don't remember. Then the piercer put a bib on me because sometimes people drool. He patted my tongue dry and marked it with a pen of some sort. Then...this part is important!!! He put on the clamp and Checked Underneath my tongue for veins! Always make sure they do that otherwise I think it could result in massive bleeding. So with my tongue all marked and the clamp in place he shoved the needle right through. 7 seconds later the barbell was in and it was over. There was no bleeding at all with mine, a friend of mine who got it done recently had some bleeding. Make sure that you keep your tongue out as far as possible at all times. Don't jerk it back in because then you might have a sliced tongue.

Its pressure and a slight pinch. I say keep your eyes closed and just breath if your really scared. If any of you has had your belly button pierced and you thought it was just a quick pinch well this is a teeny tiny bit worse but barely. The pain is quick, all you have to worry about is after its pierced. Not so much does it hurt, its just a pain in the ass. My piercer told me for about a week you'll regret doing it. And i definitely did. But now I love it.
Anyway the piercer told me No dairy, No alcohol, No oral sex, No french kissing, No smoking. The smoking thing though, if you do smoke he said make sure you rinse your mouth out really good with mouthwash. Non-alcoholic or Biotene is the best.
After you get it done it feels really akward. Like it shouldn't be there. Then it gets swollen, some people more then others and you can't really eat. Also some peoples tongues get a bruise on them, thats totally normal and should go away in a few days. If you attempt to eat Be careful! sometimes you accidently chew the ball and its kind of scary. The barbell is way long and sometimes digs into the bottom of your mouth but it needs to be big to accompany the swelling. Applesauce, noodles, jello, AND Ibuprofen will be your best friends. Ibuprofen is awesome with the swelling! AND Ice...let it melt on your tongue, it'll feel awesome and keep the swelling down as well. After about 2 or 3 weeks everything is pretty good, eating is way easier, I believe 2 weeks is when you can change it and don't be scared if the smaller barbell doesn't fit! Just wait another week or so and it should be fine. And remember rinse your mouth out all the time! After eating, drinking, and smoking! Even when it is healed you should always keep your mouth clean.
Ok and this is a cautionary tale as well. I went to pick up my brother after i got it done and i saw my mom was there to pick him up too. She asked me if i got anything pierced and i showed her and she got really mad. So I went home and I took the piercing out! I was all crying and stuff and then I decided what the hell and put it back in. About 10/15 minutes later I took it out again and my mom came home. I showed her what I did and she told me that I wasted $45 and to put it back in. So again i put it back in AND that I believe is the reason why my tongue ring took about 3 weeks to stop being really swollen and 1 month or a little more for me to change the barbell! So don't mess with it when you first get it pierced. Don't touch it, don't stick it out of your mouth, don't take it out!
Tongue rings are super fun to play with, but sometimes the balls can come undone so make sure you check them and tighten them every now and then. Enjoy!
