For years I wanted to get my tongue pierced. But my parents hated it. They let me get my ears pierced seven times though. But they always said no about the tongue. They said I had to wait until I turned 18. Then I could get it pierced if I still wanted to. But about a month after I turned 18 I said I was going to get it done but they said no. My car is under my dads name until I pay it off. If I got my tongue pierced, they would take the car away. But eventually I talked them into letting me keep the car and get my piercing.
At A Glance Author Tiffany Contact Tiffany@bme.anon When A month ago Studio Fishbone Location Sebastian, FL I never actually thought I would get it pierced. I figured I would chicken out if my parents actually gave in. My mom would constantly tell me that getting the tongue pierced is bad for you. How they could hit a vein and you could die. And how it can lead to other problems. But I figured that out of everyone who has their tongue pierced, the percent of successful cases definitely outweighs the percent of unsuccessful cases. She even printed some articles she found online about how dangerous it is. But I didn't care. I really wanted my tongue pierced.
So one Friday I drove to Sebastian and picked up my two friends. Together we went to Fishbone. The guy was busy tattooing someone so I filled out the paperwork and waited. He took a break from tattooing and told me to go into the little room. I sat on the chair and he told me to rinse with the mouthwash he had. I was shaking. From reading stories on BME, I had the idea that it didn't hurt. One of my friends who came with me had gotten his tongue pierced a couple months earlier. He said it hurt like hell. So there I am. Ready to get my tongue pierced after wanting it done for years. He told me to stick out my tongue and he put the clamp on. My friend was telling me that during that time I was breathing really heavily. He got the needle and just stuck it though. He did it bottom to top. I could hear it going through. But it didn't hurt! I don't even know if the clamp hurt. I think I was too nervous to feel any pain. But the piercing definitely did not hurt. Then he but the barbell though. The needle ended up falling on the floor. Then he screwed the ball on. Or so he tried. For some reason, it wouldn't screw on right. I don't know why. He said some phrase like "that's weird" or something like that and freaked me out because I thought something was wrong. But he eventually screwed the ball on. When I put my tongue back inside my mouth, I could taste blood. And it seemed like it bled a lot. That's what my friends told me anyways. The first words out of my mouth were "It didn't hurt you pussy," to my friend that said it 'hurt like hell.' Later he told me he said it hurt only so I would be expecting pain and there wouldn't be any. Which, I guess was better then not expecting any pain and having it hurt a little. Everyone's pain tolerance is different. But it didn't hurt me. I paid him $40 and headed to Publix for some Ibuprofen. Then we went to McDonalds. I couldn't eat anything, but I wasn't hungry so I just sipped on some water which helped wash the blood off the tongue and kind of numb it.
The healing went okay. That night it didn't hurt or really swell much. But the next day it was sore. And swelled up. The bottom ball was irritating the underside of my tongue. But eventually I got used to that. For the first day or two, all I ate was soup. Then a couple days later I was eating semi normal foods but taking tiny bites. A little later I thought I could chew food almost regularly. But I wasn't used to having a metal bar in my mouth. I ended up biting the ball quite a few times. Luckily it didn't hurt the tongue too much or break any teeth.
A couple days after I got it pierced I couldn't talk right. I think it was because of the swelling. The swelling lasted around a week. I would recommend using Biotene mouthwash. At first I was using Listerine. I guess I wasn't paying attention to the aftercare instructions (still overcoming the shock of my new piercing) because my friend told me he said to dilute the Listerine with water. I was using it straight. Then I diluted it. But then I decided to switch to Biotene. Supposedly it's better for the piercing because there's no alcohol in it. I heard it makes it heal faster also. It seems like after I switched, it hurt a lot less too.
I've had my tongue pierced for 3 weeks now and I love it. I am constantly playing with it when I'm at work or in class. Hey, its fun. In a week or so I'm going to change the bar. It's still the original piercing bar. The length of it is getting annoying. It makes an indent on the top of my tongue because when I close my mouth, the bar can't stay vertical so it lies on the tongue. If you want to get your tongue pierced but are nervous about the pain or the risks, I would say go for it. You only live once.
