I've always been a fan of body modifications, and I've always wanted to have some kind of piercing to set me apart from the other people in my boring, agricultural/suburban town. Most of the little blonde rich girls had their navels pierced, or some crap like that, but I wanted something not many girls my age (seventeen at the time)had done. That's when I had noticed that all my cool coworkers at my job had tongue piercings. It was genius! This piercing was easy to hide while at work (tattoos and piercings weren't allowed) and easy to hide from my dad, who is NOT into piercings. My mom was fine with taking me, since my parents were getting a divorce she wanted to do anything to make my father totally angry at anything. My boyfriend of four years was also a little worried because I already had too much unwanted attention from men, and he thought that with a tongue piercing guys would see me as more slutty and promiscuous. He's always been a little insecure, and that was his thing to deal with.

So, I had decided, against my boyfriend's and father's wishes, I set out to get it with my mom while she got her nose pierced. My brother had wanted to get his ears pierced there too, but they didn't do the kind of ear piercings he is really interested in. I went into the shop, and was not surprised to see the extremely clean interior of the place. I had been in there before to set up a consultation for my boyfriend. He got inked there, and they did a pretty good job but it was pretty expensive. I told the piercer that I wanted to have my tongue done, and he asked for my ID and my mother's signature and went to get everything ready for me. I was so nervous, it was disgusting. My heart was beating so fast, I knew I probably looked like some innocent school girl caught in the wrong place, so I willed myself to be brave and take the pain for the beauty that I wanted. Beauty hurts, just like my momma always told me.

Finally the side room was ready for me, and he called me to come in like it was an execution. With my mother in tow for moral support and a hand to hold, I walked into the dimly lit piercing room. There was a picture of a naked, dark haired vampire woman in a sexy pose across the wall from me that I commented on nervously. It made me feel a little better and took my mind off the pain I was about to experience. He had me lie down on a comfortable leather chair, and relax while he measured and disinfected the spot. He then had me stick my tongue out as far as possible, and grabbed my tongue with the tongs. I was already SUPREMELY scared of the pain, not to say that I'm a wuss because I'm really not, but I had no idea what to expect. I've done some of my own piercings, but nothing like this, so of course I was a little shaky. He had me take three deep breaths, then he poked the needle through. There was just a little bit of pain, then boom, it was in. I sat there in shock at how much it didn't hurt. He then put the jewelery in, and I had a bona fide piercing!

My tongue felt heavy and took about half an hour to swell up completely, but I was so happy with it. I could talk alright, but my speech was slurred a little and I had to make sure the bar didn't get stuck on my teeth. One thing to keep in mind is to keep your head elevated when you sleep because it will swell up a lot and you'll get teeth marks on your tongue. Also, be extremely careful with taking it out even if it's a couple of months afterward. I had to take it out sometimes when my boss was in at the job at the same time as me, and I would only have it out for about five hours, and it would close out by the time my shift was over. Always wash your mouth out with listerine after every meal, and your tongue will feel so much better afterwards, and I never had any problems with infections or anything like that. It may burn at first, but it feels amazingly good afterwards. My father flipped out when he found out, and he wanted to rip it out, but he's come to terms with my coming of age piercing. My boyfriend has come to love it, and no one at all has said anything to me any more inappropriate than what I usually get, so that theory of his is out the door. People hardly ever notice the piercing, and it hasn't stopped people from taking me seriously. My boyfriend loves the new things I can do with this piercing, if you know what I mean. I've had one painfully embarrassing experience like that, but other than that it's amazing I suppose. I still have to try a vibrating piece and see how that works. I still love my body mod six months later, and can't wait to get my next one: A TATTOO!! But that's another story.
