Every since I was younger I wanted to get my tongue pierced. I have quite a few friends that have it and my boyfriend also has it. And I always found that it looked awesome. But quite understandably my mother never liked the idea. She was always cool with tattoos but not so much with piercings. That's the reason for me having about 4 tattoos until now, but that's another story.

About 6 months ago I moved away to go to college. And ever since then I've been thinking of getting another tattoo or even getting a piercing. So after thinking it over quite a bit and discussing it with my boyfriend, I decided to go get my tongue pierced. We had originally set a date about 2 weeks away. So I was excited and asking all the usual questions. Like "does it hurt?", "how does it feel?", "does it bother you?" I think I almost drove him nuts. Because it's like people asking me about tattoo's, if it hurt etc. Once you have it done then you have an idea about what it feels like. It's hard to explain, plus everyone is different so what hurts for me, doesn't necessarily have to hurt for anybody else.

Anyway I went about doing my usual things everyday, but thinking constantly about the piercing. Then one day I came home from school, and I it just hit me... "I want to do it today".

So I went and asked my boyfriend to take me to the place where he got his done. After a bit of reasoning he agreed to take me... Yay! Except... the place was about an hour away!

So we got dressed and left. The whole drive there I was getting more nervous by the second, I felt my hands getting cold and before I could get comfortable again, we arrived.

We went inside and to my luck there weren't many people there that day. Lucky because I think if I had to wait I would've chickened out. Anyway, he went and told the piercer what I wanted, and he started getting everything ready. About 5 minutes later he gave me some mouthwash and told me to clean my mouth and take a seat. I sat down; he told me to stick out my tongue and held it with the clamps. He then started to check where the veins where etc. But I wouldn't know, I had my eyes closed the whole time. About a few seconds later I could feel the needle pierce through, which wasn't really painfull except on the bottom. And in about 20 seconds it was done. I got more mouthwash to clean my mouth again, got my aftercare instructions and I could go home.

Later that night I was in pain. Not pain like when you get a cut but like my tongue felt so stiff and when I spoke it hurt on the bottom where the ball was. So I decided just to go to sleep.

I drooled basically the whole night I think, because when I woke up my pillow was soaking wet. But the good thing is it hurts less the second day. I've been eating soup basically and I also eat sandwiches... but very slowly. The only way I found that it doesn't hurt is when I place the bread all the way on my back teeth and then slowly chew and swallow. Be fore warned... it is a time consuming methode but soup leaves me hungry so I find it well worth it.

I would recommend this piercing to anybody, I LOVE it. But I would also say do it when you have about a week off and you don't have to talk much or eat on the go, because the more you speak the more it hurts or you run a greater risk of getting it stuck on your front teeth and it takes time to eat so that you don't cause yourself extra pain. (But then again, everybody is different some people don't even have any pain.)

Another thing the guy told me was to dilute the Listerine when I clean my mouth at home. Because of the fact that your mouth has bacteria that helps with the healing process and if you use too much mouthwash or too frequently it slows down the healing, and you can see it when your tongue turns a bit white or brownish, then just cut down on cleaning your mouth.

In about 7 days I have to go back for a check up and to have the barbell changed. Honestly, I'm quite looking forward to it; the long barbell hurts the underside of my mouth when I have my mouth closed. But other than that I can't complain. I'm just a bit paranoid about it getting infected and keep asking my boyfriend if I need to clean it again, and if I play with it too much what will happen. So I called the shop and they told me to play with it but gently, just rotate the piercing with your tongue and move it up and down move and move your tongue so it doesn't become too stiff. The reason to play with it a bit is so that the hole doesn't close up too tight around the piercing because that will hurt too.
