First of all i would like to make it perfectly clear that I do not condone DIY piercings nor is it advisable to try this yourself you may end up regretting it and could cause yourself some damage. You should always use a professional piercer and if you do end up piercing yourself seek the advice of a professional should anything go wrong .Now that I've made that clear here is my story.

It all started with looking at the pictures of other peoples beautiful pierced tongue webs on BME. I was amazed that any piercing could look that pretty. That was all it took and I was hooked. I had to have this piercing. Now.

My mum is pretty conservative and she had totally flipped out when I got my lip pierced (professionally) so there was no way she would have payed for this and at the time I had no spare cash so I decided to do it myself. Not a wise decision as it turns out.

I'd read many accounts of others DIY tongue webs and it didn't sound all that difficult so I decided to give it a try. I couldn't get hold of any proper needles so I stupidly decided to use a regular sewing needle. I'd used a similar one to pierce my navel before so I thought it would be ok plus a tongue web is a much much thinner piece of flesh than a navel to pierce.

I sterilized the needle in some hydrogen peroxide and fetched a barbell from my sisters stuff that was probably meant for eyebrow piercings. I then proceeded to sterilize the jewelery and look in the mirror to decide the placement for my piercing. Once I had decided where I wanted it to go I picked up the needle, pinched my web between two fingers, took a deep breath and pushed it into my skin. It entered with a pop and didn't hurt at all so I carried on pushing the needle in and before I knew it I could see its shiny silver tip poking through the other side of my web. I was delighted.

Now came the tricky bit. I'd read that it can be very difficult to get the jewelery into a web piercing but I can honestly say it didn't prove to be all that hard for me. I will add now that i was still pinching my web so that could have made it easier. I pulled the needle out which stung a bit and picked up the barbell. It went through easily at first but wouldn't go through the last bit of skin so I gave it a wiggle and it popped through. I picked up the ball and attempted to screw it onto the barbell a process which took about half an hour due to me dribbling everywhere, dropping the ball about a dozen times and having to re-sterilize it.

Eventually I got the ball screwed on and stood back to admire my new piercing. When I looked closely I could see that it was slightly crooked but it wasn't that noticeable so i was pleased. I rinsed my mouth with saline solution and raced out to show my friends. I got very mixed reactions. Most of my friends didn't like it and couldn't understand why I had pierced it but my closest friend loved it and decided that she was going to pierce her own. I couldn't stop playing with it even though it was starting to get sore I just loved it so much. Looking back I probably aggravated it a lot that one day.

For aftercare I rinsed my mouth with saline solution after eating, drinking or smoking and cleaned around the entry and exit points twice on the one day I had the piercing.

The day after I had pierced it I woke up to find my web very swollen and red. I assumed it was normal and had only happened because I kept playing with it. It looked very aggravated so I rinsed my mouth with some more saline solution and cleaned around the jewelery with a cotton bud to remove any dirt that may have accumulated over night.

After a couple of days though it had not improved at all so I decided to take it out. A decision I agonized over for about two hours. I was absolutely devastated but it was just to difficult to eat and drink since the bar was the wrong size plus it made me speak a bit weirdly and i didn't want my mum to notice. The day after I took it out I noticed little white bumps on either side of my web at the entry and exit points.

I was very upset to lose my tongue web piercing even though I only had it for a short time. I would definitely consider getting this piercing again but professionally this time. I would also recommend it to other people despite my negative experience as it is a very sexy piercing. Get it done professionally though and make sure it is fitted with the proper jewelery I cannot stress this enough.
