Hi everyone. I got my tongue pierced about one year ago. Well one day I decided that I wanted to do something for myself which would let me know how strong a character I am. I'm constantly being told I'm shy and timid and decided to put my character to the test. I was thinking something around the lines of piercing and tattoos. That night I dreamt I had a tongue piercing. I then went and checked out everyone's experiences on BME and thought hey, it doesn't sound to bad. Shakily I called up "Pozzest Piercing" and they fitted me in for an appointment that day. I then called up my friend Kate to come along with me. I made sure I ate till I was full because I'm prone to fainting, and kept a water bottle with me.

Some great things I was told on the phone and from other people was that getting your tongue pierced is the least painful area to pierce as it is a soft tissue muscle. It's a great piercing for your first one. Also, once the needle has gone through, the hardest part is over, and to concentrate on your breathing when you're getting pierced up.
I was so scared, shaky. I thought about backing out plenty of times but thankfully I didn't. I picked out the tongue ring. I chose one that was black with a white star on the top. (Not every piercing salon lets you have decorative jewellery before your downsize)
With my heart beating rapidly it was my turn. I sat down, had the mouth rinse. Got told all facts, what I'll have to do, my piercer was very friendly and calming and told me I would be fine. Okay, so she put the needle to my tongue (do not look at the needle, ever, it'll freak you out!) I concentrated on my breathing and keeping it steady and I felt a push through my tongue. I was surprised at how much it did not hurt! She then quickly put the jewellery ring and then tightened it up, and I carefully put my tongue back into my mouth.
I think I was pretty shocked at myself that I had actually done it. I couldn't believe it was over! She ran through the cleaning procedures for a while. I then looked at my tongue and saw it, I was like, cool! Walked out, pretty faint still (I have low blood pressure)
As we were walking along my friend Kate hugged me and told me how proud she was of me, she said she couldn't believe I did it. She then said, "Show me your tongue!" so I did and then she yelled, "Oh that's gross!"
"What's gross? Huh?" I replied.
"There's blood in your mouth"
I just laughed that one off.
By now my tongue was starting to hurt a bit, and it steadily got harder for me to talk. I tried to eat an ice cream but it hurt to much as I'd unfortunately chosen a tangy tropical cream flavour which KILLED my tongue. (Go for icy poles, ice blocks are awesome!) When I got home my mum yelled at me and told me I was grounded. (She has now come around to my tongue piercing thankfully, and I feel bad doing it behind her back) And for the next four days I had trouble speaking properly, I worked at a childcare centre at the time and couldn't read to the children.. Got in trouble for 'being lazy' for not reading too.
It was kind of a throbbing pain, I took lots of ibuprofen but it didn't really numb my tongue much (I thought) after you've cleaned your tongue it hurts considerably less.
Four days later it was pretty much painless! I thought that was pretty good considering. I guess the healing time may affect a lot of people as we use our tongues so much more than we realise!
The weekend after I went out drinking and the Sunday after my tongue was swollen and sore all over again. I'd only drunken vodka and lemonade all night and so it didn't take long for it to heal again.
Don't kiss people. You could get some really bad disease off them! That's pretty gross!
Another week later I was playing with my tongue ring like I'd had it for a few months. When I got my down size it didn't hurt at all! Very surprising!
Nowadays I'm not very aware of the piercing. Some people don't even know I've got it. Its funny I didn't even realise that most peoples piercing are in the centre of their tongue, where as mine is more towards the tip, so I'm kinda original.
So far I haven't broken any teeth, I haven't even accidentally chomped on my tongue ring either, and you've just got to be careful.
And I think my experience was pretty good, but I think it just depends on the person.
