When Three months ago
Alright, so a few months ago, my friend came up to me and shows me her tongue webbing, with a little barbell through it. She told me she did it herself. I thought it was the coolest thing ever. It was something easy enough to hide from my parents, something you could do at home, and she said hers healed just fine. I wanted mine exactly like it.

I was going through a rebellious phase, so I bought some hair dye, and some 14G jewellery and got on the bus to my friend's house.

We got there, I told her my plan and she looked at me like I was crazy. I'd originally planned to do my tongue webbing and lip. The jewellery I bought was two 14G barbells, one was slightly curved with round beads, and the other was completely round with two spiky beads. I'd planning on using the curved one for my webbing, and the round one for my lip.

Okay, so this is attempt number one:

Sitting on my best friend's bathroom counter, with a needle to my tongue webbing. It was really quite difficult, because I don't have a whole lot of webbing, so it was basically just underneath my tongue that I was going to be piercing. Anyways, I pierced through, and absolutely could not find the hole. I sat there for about fifteen minutes, trying to push this barbell through a tiny hole underneath my tongue. And what do you know, the power goes out, just when I'm sure I have it. I scream at my friend to get in the bathroom, and she comes in and holds up a few candles, and I try again. I pierced through about three more times, and still, no luck. So I move into her room, with light coming through the windows. This time she gave up and told me to do it myself. I sat for about another half an hour, repiercing, trying to put the jewellery in, repiercing, trying again. FINALLY I got it through.. and it was crooked. Putting the bead on afterwards it was pierced was the most frustrating experience of my life. I tried to get my friend to do it for me, but she was grossed out at the idea completely and refused. So I sat there, dropping the bead in my mouth repeatedly, and trying again. I kept it in though. And the first thing I did? Went out for a cigarette. Not smart. Also avoiding eating salt and vinegar chips ten minutes after you pierce through. Not very smart at all.

Attempt number two:

Well, after about four days, I felt like my tongue was going to fall off, so I took out the first one. Within about two days, my "webbing" healed up fairly well. Two weeks or so later, I decided to try again.

Sitting on my own bathroom counter during the day, making sure the power wasn't going to go out, I tried again. I had a thick needle from my mom's sewing box, which went through fine. I did have to do it twice more, because I couldn't find the hole. That has to be the hardest part about a tongue webbing piercing, is finding the hole once you've pierced through, especially with a barbell that's curved in any way. Finally I got the jewellery in, and this time I used the round one with the spiky beads, because it was so much easier to get the bead on. I've tried switching my barbell to a straight one, but I could not get the round beads on. I kept dropping them in my mouth, but I was told to use a pair of tweezers, so that's probably easier.

The second time it healed up perfectly within a week. I've been told it's not good to smoke right after you get it pierced, but I went out and smoked normally and it healed fine. I would not recommend it though. I didn't talk funny at all, I could eat anything I wanted. I wouldn't recommend using spiky beads though, they irritate the bottom of your mouth like none other, especially waking up in the morning.

YES. You drool EVERYWHERE. No, it doesn't hurt. Piercing my ears (which I ended up doing the same day) hurt more than doing my tongue webbing. YES. You get gross disgusting plaque on the jewellery and you must clean it.

Other than that, tongue webbing is a fairly easy piercing. It's really easy to manage, I just brushed my teeth normally, didn't use mouthwash, or anything. It's also one of the easiest piercings to hide. I wouldn't recommend doing it at home, you're always far better off to get pierced professionally, but hey, I got lucky I guess. Looking back, I guess I'm really lucky I didn't get an infection.
