I have had my tongue piercing for exactly two weeks now. It is beautiful. This is how it went: I was originally supposed to go to a place that my friends had gone to. I felt safe and comfortable knowing that their piercings had gone well and I did not want to take my chances somewhere new. So we went, and it turned out that the piercer guy was not there. Since I was determined to get it done that day, we went to the same salon but in a different location, so it still made me feel secure. So we got there and it was a very clean place and as corny as it sounds, it had good vibes and I felt good when I walked in. The piercer was extremely helpful and did not mind my asking many many questions. I sat down in a dentist-like chair and he had me rinse my mouth out with mouthwash.(the worst part for me)Then he had me stick out my tongue so he could dry it off. He placed an ink mark where he would pierce my tongue and asked if I approved. He then clamped my tongue and the needle went through. Then he placed the barbell in. Honestly I did not even believe it was done. I thought only the clamp part was over, it was quick and painless that I did not even know the needle went through my tongue. And do not think I am just saying this because I have a high tolerance of pain, because I really do not.

If you want a comparable pain, just think of the fact that biting your tongue hurts 10 times more than getting your tongue pierced, at least that is what I believe. After the procedure, I received an after care sheet that explained all the different sort of cleansing methods. A few minutes later, my tongue became swelled up and I started, what would be my diet for the next week, chewing on ice and drinking ice water, and loads and loads of ice cream. At first it is a very funny feeling of getting used to the ball on the top and bottom of your mouth. For the first couple of days whenever I ate something I could have sworn that i had swallowed the whole barbell. Then I would look in the mirror and realize that it was impossible to do. One thing I did that I do not recommend is playing with it the first couple days. Since I have an oral fixation anyway, anything in my mouth I would play with. So, due to my excessive twirling and running the balls along my teeth, it caused the swelling to increase. But after the swelling does go down, it is really hard to just let it sit in your mouth.

Following the initial 4 days, the swelling and soreness, start to decrease and you can actually start eating food. I suggest starting gradually; start with mashed potatoes.(not hot)You pretty much have to teach yourself to become comfortable with a foreign object in your mouth. At first, you start to push everything to one side of your mouth and then it does not bother you at all anymore. Now, at two weeks, everything is back to normal. My tongue is not swollen at all, and I can eat whatever I choose to. Some people have said that they have problems while they are eating with them biting on the balls, however, personally I have never experienced those problems. The only uncomfortable part about the entire experience, is the soreness you feel with your tongue the 1st couple days. But 2 or 3 Advil will do the trick, no problem.

The aftercare is super easy too. I suggest getting a new toothbrush to get rid of all the germs of your other ones. Brush 2 or 3 times a day, and after everything you eat or drink that is not water, gargle 1/2 Listerine, 1/2 water for 30 seconds and there won't be any problems. Also, I would highly recommend finding many things to do the first week. When you are occupied, the pain is hardly noticeable. And all the rumors of not being able to drink, smoke, or kiss for the first 6 weeks are not true. As long as you rinse your mouth after, there are no problems.

I suggest going with a friend that has gone through the experience before hand or just really looking into it. Because I did research, I knew what to expect and knew how the procedure would go. I would recommend it to anybody and everybody, it heals extremely fast, is really easy to take care of, and its a lot of fun to play with. Show it off, and have fun with it. And just remember, the thought of the actual piercing is much, much worse than the actual procedure. The more you think about it, and the more you think about the pain and negative side effects, the more scared and unpleasant the experience will be. If you just think f how much fun you are going to have with it, the more positive your piercing will be.
