I randomly decided to get my tongue pierced after talking to a guy at Sam Goody about piercings. Getting my tongue pierced was one of my worst fears, but it was also the only piercing I had really wanted to get since I got my eyebrow, and then navel several weeks afterwards. To me, a tongue piercing is the most sexy piercing you could get. I had kissed several guys with their tongue pierced and it made kissing that much more exciting. I went to the piercing place knowing that I wanted to get something done, but I didn't really know what.... it was either a tongue piercing or another ear piercing, but ear piercings are boring and I needed to face my fear anyway. Then I changed my mind. And then again. And again...
I stood there for about 3 minutes looking at barbells when suddenly I said "Fine, fuck it, I'm doing it right now."
The guy laughed at my attitude and made me give him my id and fill out papers and whatnot. After doing that and giving him the money (The wall said it was 30 but for some reason he only made me pay 20), he told me I'd have to wait 5 minutes since I was his first piercing of the day and he'd have to get it all set up. I'd say the wait before the piercing was the worst part of this experience. I was looking at tattoo designs. I could feel the sweat trickle down my neck. Finally, he called me in. Told me his name, and told me getting your tongue pierced was nothing, that getting your eyebrow (which I had gotten done as my first piercing) was MUCH more painful than this. It made me feel a lot better. So he made me wash out my mouth with Listerine and told me to not spit it out for about a minute, that it would numb my tongue more. After that was done, he took out a marker and marked in the middle of my tongue. Next was the clamps, which was pretty much the most uncomfortable part of the whole piercing.
He told me to take a deep breath in, and then out again, and just when I thought he was going to pierce me, he told me to breathe in and out again as though to fool me into thinking he wasn't doing it. Then the needle went through. I felt it go through, but there wasn't any pain. It was just a bit uncomfortable because my mouth began to fill with blood. He gave me a paper towel and told me to blot my mouth out. He had to help me get my tongue back in my mouth because I couldn't move it myself.
He asked me how I felt and all I could reply is "Phat din't hurf harly aaaaaddd alll". And it didn't, at least until that night...
If I were to say anything about the after experience of a tongue piercing, it would be that it's like learning to use your mouth all over again. That small piece of metal is a little added weight to your tongue so it makes it that much harder to talk, eat, kiss, etc. In fact, the first time I kissed someone after getting it done, I felt like I slobbered more than I kissed him. It was rather gross. Watch out for that. The next 3 days were torture. I felt like ripping my tongue out because it was so swollen I drooled on myself when I was laying down. I couldn't eat anything but soup and the only thing that made me feel better was sucking on ice and washing out my mouth with this antibacterial mouthwash called Biotene. The bottom metal piece dug into the bottom of my mouth and it was pretty sore for the third day, but after that, I didn't feel anything.
Now I'm not afraid of anything. But I must say, you should keep your barbell nice and tight, or you'll lose it. I'm serious, it will just fall right out of your mouth when you're talking if it's not tight enough.
But it's my favorite piercing to date. I've even though about getting another tongue piercing beside it because I like it so much. :)
The only problem I have with this piercing is the price of the bars... I've decided I don't like the short bars, but the long bars, like the one I have in right now are usually 25-40 bucks, depending on how long they are. But the longer the bar you get, the more of an indent you get on your tongue. I don't know. Maybe my tongue is just really soft.Go get it done. You won't regret it, I promise. And once it heals, you can leave it out for days at a time and the hole still won't close up on you.
