I had wanted to get my tongue pierced for the longest time. I finally did it the day I turned eighteen. My boyfriend took me to the tattoo shop. He already had his tongue pierced and said it was not that bad, but I was still really scared that it would hurt too much and I would wuss out. Right before we got there I begged my boyfriend to drive around the block one more time to give me more time to prepare because I was really nervous. He knew I really wanted to get my tongue pierced so he did not drive around, we went right in.

Tim, the owner of Aardvark Tattoos, was working and performed the procedure. He had me pay first and then he gave me some mouth wash. I did not have bad breath; it was to numb my tongue. I had never heard of that before but it worked. I had to swish it around for five minutes. Then we went into the "sterile room." I sat down while Tim got all the equipment ready. My boyfriend could only watch from afar and was not allowed to hold my hand. Tim took out a scary looking tool that was kind of like an old fashioned pair of tongs that had holes for the needle to go through. That was the worst part; the clamp was jagged to grip my slippery tongue. That was the only pain I felt. I could see the needle go into my tongue but I could not feel it. There was blood on the paper towel he was holding under neath my mouth, but amazingly I did not feel any pain. The procedure is pretty quick and surprisingly painless.

After the procedure we headed to the store to buy Listerine and Motrin as we were instructed. The Listerine is for sterilization and the Motrin for pain and swelling. Then we went home and my boyfriend crushed ice cubes for me to suck on. Even though I did not feel pain while being pierced I definitely felt it after. I had to keep up on taking Motrin every few hours for about three days. For those three days I basically ate apple sauce or soft things. I could only chew with my front teeth because if the food went to the back of my mouth it would get caught around my tongue and become painful to remove. After about a week I still could not eat well but I was dying to go to my favorite Cajun restaurant. As I said earlier I could only chew with my front teeth, so it was especially hard to eat all that chicken. Also, the hot sauce was not too good for my tongue. My boyfriend dared me to try the mega death hot sauce. It was terrible and I had to go the gas station and buy Rolaids. It was so hard to eat anything that I was starting to regret piercing my tongue. It did not seem worth the trouble. I was sick of apple sauce, and yogurt, and pudding, and jello. It did not really help me lose any weight (if that is Your plan) I was just sick of all the soft gross food. But it is not like I could eat good things like milk shakes, using straws hurt my tongue too much. Also, it was hard to open my mouth wide enough for a spoon for a week or so. After a week or more the pain completely subsided. However, eating was not normal yet. Foods like pasta or cheese would get tangled around my tongue ring. I would accidentally bite my tongue or the tongue ring would get stuck between my top jaw and bottom jaw while I was chewing. Luckily I still have not cracked any of my teeth. Chewing gum was out of the question; it also only would get tangled. Although eating was a big problem, speech was not. The tongue ring did not affect my pronunciatio n at all.

After the pain and discomfort was gone, the tongue ring was very fun. It was fun to play with in class or tease people with. It was also fun just to be spotted playing with it so people would think it was cool. Occasionally there is some pain where the ring goes through my tongue but it is not painful enough for me to take it out. Also there is an annoying build up of plaque on the balls of the tongue ring that must be picked off every so often. Those are the only problems with my tongue ring. Before I got my tongue pierced I had heard stories of cancer of the tongue being caused by tongue piercing. That is a myth; my tongue is doing just fine.
