My Sweet 16 was approaching and I wanted to do something I've been thinking about for what seems like forever and that was getting my tongue pierced. At first, I thought that I should just get my belly button pierced, but that was only because I didn't want people to think otherwise of my behavior (if you know what I mean). I told my boyfriend and he figured that I should not worry about what other people had to say and that I should just do what I want. So, with his advice I decided to go to the piercing/ tattoo parlor I have been recommended to because of the superb work that they do. My friend went there and she said they didn't hurt her and I saw how nice she looked with hers so that was another reason to go out there and do what I've been wanting to do.

I went into the shop, got the paper work filled out, and went into the room to have my tongue examined. I was excited more than I was scared and it just so happened to be that there was a problem. MY TONGUE WAS TOO SHORT!!! It barely goes past my lips and I really thought he wouldn't notice it. I was so determined to have it done that I asked him if he could find a possible way to have it done. He had to estimate and search and what not, all to make me happy. I was serious when I said that I wasn't leaving without my tongue pierced. Once he said he couldn't do it, tears came to my eyes. I think that's what made him try harder and I kind of threw the guilt out there because I had to tell him I was the birthday girl. :-)
Luckily, he did and I was the happiest girl in the world. So, he made the marks with the blue marker after he made me rinse my mouth with blue Listerine. He had to tell me that it would be crooked so that he would not puncture any blood vessels. That was quite all right with me. Sitting in the room with the clamp in my mouth, I was too anxious to even realize that the whole procedure was over. It did not hurt the only thing was I heard it rip and to be honest the clamp hurt more than the piercing itself. I left with a newly pierced swollen tongue and cleaning instruction. This is one experience that I will never forget or regret because it's been something that I like a lot.
But another thing I can't forget is the way my mom found out. Yep, I did all of this without her consent. I did not want anything to stop me so I did it on my own. After I left, I went to the bodega and bought some bubblegum. Then I went to the Chinese store and bought some wonton soup although I couldn't eat the wontons. My tongue was pretty swollen now that I think about it. I went home and relaxed with my family as if nothing was wrong and played it cool. Ate my ice chips to reduce my swelling and they still didn't suspect anything. It wasn't until the next morning when I was talking to my mom. She just had to see something shiny in my mouth, which was my shiny silver tongue ring. You know she had to have something to say because she was pretty upset especially since she's the type that HATES tattoos and body piercings other than the 1 and only 1 in your ear. But she got over it she just occasionally decides to throw it in my face once in a while.
When I went back to school, it was noticeable as soon as I spoke because of the fact that I lost the silver ball and had to replace it with a bright blue one. Just my luck, during the first two days when my tongue was still swollen my tongue ring kept unscrewing and eventually it fell off when I was trying to tighten it. And not only did it fall but it fell down the drain. My cousin had to come to my rescue because I had to ask her for some advice since she had hers pierced too. I left the bar in my tongue so that it wouldn't close and we went to buy a new a tongue ring the next morning.
Anyway it's going on 8 months since I got it back in October and it's been no trouble at all. My favorite thing about having it is when people notice it and admire the different tongue rings I'd have to match my outfit. Hey, what can I say? It makes a great accessory to the many outfits I wear to where ever I have to go. I just have to remember that it isn't appropriate around everyone or everywhere
