For years I had longed for a tongue piercing, I always thought it looked so provocative and after watching Tanya, the lead dominatrix from 'Preaching to the Perverted' with hers I knew I'd be well suited for one. However, I have quite a short tongue, and was afraid I would not be able to stick it far enough out in order for it to be clamped, and that there wouldn't be enough room in front of the web for it to be a success. All the photos I found were of long stretched out tongues, which is why I put it off for so long.

Venoms/Vipers – the perfect solution! No problems about the web as they would go either side of it! I was so excited that there was now some hope, the very next day I visited indigo tattoo to suggest it and for him to take a look at my tongue, as I thought – he said my tongue was short but that there were no problems and he could do it for me straight away!

We decided I would have both piercing done that day, left side first but I was warned my mouth would feel extremely cluttered and would probably bruise. I have 14 other piercings and have always been confident, but the tongue was unknown territory for me so I didn't know how to prepare myself. Fortunately I had persuaded a friend to get a central one done a month or so ago so I could watch her throughout the healing process and see what it was like. She had it done at the same place so I was very confident in the piercer's skills.

On went the clamps that hurt the web but I was assured that it 'was' just the clamps and the needle wasn't going to go through it. I wasn't really ready when the needle went through, he had been studying my tongue and lifting up the clamps to take a good look which was uncomfortable, but he didn't do any markings, that is what I assumed he was doing which is why I let out a silly girlish squeal when the needle went through! There was no 'pop' and there was no blood. I took a little break to swallow and wiggle my tongue and then forward with the right side! This hurt a little more than the first, but still nothing terrible. The drooling. Blimey, all dignity flew out the window and I was left with a wet path on my skirt and a very slimy chin.

I felt dizzy, and went a little pale so I sat there for a few minutes continually swallowing and attempting to make sense of what was going on in my mouth, it certainly did feel cluttered... and wet.

I was advised to buy ibuprofen and some antiseptic mouthwash, which I would dilute or some sea salt. One of the piercers friends popped his head through the beaded curtain to see how it went and told me how great it looked, and sure enough, it did.

It's been around 9 hours now and I've been out for a meal with parents, which was awful. I could only manage 3 pieces of pasta and some smooth ice cream, this took hours and was extremely frustrating. I couldn't tell what were the metal balls and what was food. I found it difficult to manoeuvre the food to my teeth then to the throat, I found myself throwing my head to the side to push the food as using my tongue was too stressful. By the end of the three pieces of pasta my tongue was really aching and wasn't ready for the cold ice cream. I've recently had some soup and yoghurt, which were perfect and is what I will be surviving on for the next week.

I can't wait until I get the bars swapped to a smaller size, hopefully then my speech will improve. I imagine my tongue will start to look rather disgusting after a few days as ill find it difficult to clean with the brush and normally your tongue will naturally clean itself on the roof of your mouth – which of course, it is unable to do.

I can't stop looking at it, he's used larger balls on the top than on the bottom and it looks fantastic. Absolutely no regrets so far and I much prefer venoms to a 'normal' central piercing. Although I've read it's a longer healing process, I wasn't warned about this and a few hours later the swelling hasn't gone down but I'm in no pain and when I'm not trying to talk it feels totally comfortable. But lets see what it feels like in the morning, hope I don't swallow my tongue ;)
