I have always wanted my tongue pierced, but I never wanted to spend the money and was a afraid. I had always heard that it was very painful. About one year ago, I finally got up the guts to do it. I was on a road trip with some friends, I had a pocket full of cash, and it was my birthday. The time was right. So I looked in the phone book and picked out a place.

When we found the place it looked clean and professional. In the room, we went through the whole thing. The mouthwash, the markings, the clamps, and the needle. I was surprised that it didn't hurt at all when the needle went through my tongue. Well, so far so good. Then the guy asks me to lift my tongue a little so he can put in the bar bell in. He struggled for a minute then took the needle out and said he couldn't do it. He told me my tongue was too short and he couldn't see well enough to get the barbell in. I was pissed, I was bleeding, and I wanted to know why this wasn't something he could've forseen before he put a hole in my tongue. So after I calmed down and he gave me my money back, I proceeded to get a tattoo. Then he told me to come back on Monday because the "Expert" tongue piercer would be there and he could take another try. I thought to myself, "yeah, right," thanked him for the tattoo and walked out the door.

Needless to say, I still wanted my tongue pierced, but that experience left me unsure if it was possible. What if my tongue was too short. Just my luck. So I let a year pass and I decided to get my lip pierced. So this past Tuesday, I cashed my pay check and headed for the shop. I went to the place where I got my eyebrow pierced, because I was very happy with my eyebrow piercing and they have a very good reputation in this area. When I got there on impulse I told the guy about my previous tongue piercing experience and asked him if he thought he could do it. After taking a good look at my tongue length, he said it wouldn't be a problem. Well I quickly forgot about my lip and proceeded to get my tongue pierced.

The whole thing took less than 2 minutes and it only hurt very little when he put the bar bell in. When he was done he said,"There you go, your too short tongue is pierced." I must admit, at first I wanted to panic. I was alone because none of my friends support mods and I really wish someone had gone with me for support. My heart was racing and while I was driving I couldn't help to think, "What have I done?" It feels real strange with this thing in your tongue. I found it hard to swallow at first afraid that I would pull on the barbell, and my tongue was starting to swell on the way home. My tongue didn't hurt at all, it was just uncomfortable. I found it hard to eat and I couldn't pronounce certain words correctly. I took some Aleve to help with the swelling and I also tried to suck on a lot of ice. And I took my time eating. I could shew just fine, but the food kept on getting stuck on my tongue behind my barbell. I just made sure to rinse my mouth with mouthwash(with n o alcohol) after eating and smoking and drinking anything other than water. And I brushed my teeth after every meal and also brushed the studs on my tongue gently to make sure nothing got stuck to them.

It is now two days later, and the swelling has subsided. I can swallow just fine and eat just fine and my speech is better. I still suck on ice from time to time, actually I'm sucking in ice right now. All and all I'm really happy with the piercing. It feels great to finally have my tongue pierced. The discomfort during the first day sucks, but you get used to it.

I would advise anyone who is considering having their tongue pierced to really think about it. You don't know how much you use your tongue until you can't use it. The first few days are full of discomfort and if you can't handle it, don't pierce it. But for those of you who really want it, it's a great thing. I definitely have no regrets and I can't wait until the swelling is completely gone and I can change to a shorter barbell. If you really want one, go for it!

I did.
