Tongue Piercing @ age 16

Alright - I got my tongue pierced, and would like to contribute to the tongue piercing section of BME....so here is my story....

I had been begging my parents for weeks to let me get my tongue pierced. There was only one person in town that does body piercing, and you need your parent's permission if you're under 17. So anyways, they finally agreed to let me get it done, and by that time it was Saturday night. We decided to go the next day, even though I would have school the day after I got it done.

When we got to the place, Tuti (the body piercer) had gone to the store, so I had plenty of time to sit around and get nervous. When she finally got back, she set things up and took me into the back room. She gave me a little cup listerine to rinse with (it's really not that bad) and sat me down in the dentist-like chair. She told me all of the after-care instructions and then asked me if I wanted my piercing to be as far back as her was. I told her I wanted it a little more forward (hers was quite a ways back) and she opened the packages with the clamp and really long needle. She never marked my tongue, or let me pick out the jewelry, but that's okay. Anyways, at this point, I ended up closing my eyes....I thought maybe I wouldn't notice it as much if I wasn't watching. There were people out in the main room picking out tattooes, and she left the door open, so they were standing there watching the whole thing (my parents weren't even watching). This made me a little uncomfortable, but I was more concerned about the giant needle that was about to be shoved through my tongue. So she clamped my tongue, which was quite painful, and stuck the needle in. Now everyone always says that there isn't very much pain, but I have to say, mine was pretty painful. It also took her forever to get the jewelry on. Afterwards, she gave me a cup of water and told me to rinse. I didn't know why I had to rinse until I spit out a ton of blood. I looked in the mirror, and my tongue was all red. It was still sore, but I was so high on the adreneline rush, that I barely noticed. I kept laughing - I couldn't believe I had actually done it.

Day 1 (day of piercing)
The bottom of my tongue is extremely sore. It seems like the piercing is almost right on top of the web, so whenever I lift my tongue up, it hurts. I tried eating mashed potatoes and ice cream (I was sure this would be easy) but even that was too painful to eat. Ice is good though...it sort of numbs your tongue.

Day 2
Today is Monday and I get to go to school and show everyone! (I didn't tell ANYONE that I was getting this done) I loved seeing the look of shock on everyone's face...someone even looked SCARED when I showed him. You have to understand that I am not the type of person to get weird body piercing...this is the only one I have. Anyways, my tongue is still swollen, and really sore. Although once I got to school, I was able to talk fine. But I couldn't eat breakfast (yogurt). Come to think of it, my speech hasn't really been affected at all. Yay!

Day 3
My tongue is still swollen, but it doesn't hurt as much. And the only reason I can tell it's swollen is because there is no room left on the barbell, and there are ridges on the end of my tongue where it runs into my teeth :)

One week
Well, it has been a little over a week since I got it done, and I absolutely love it! There is no pain anymore, and I can't stop playing with it. It is a little farther back than I would have preferred, but that's okay - it is right in the center. I want to get a new one with a slightly smaller ball, but I'm not sure if I want the barbell to be shorter....it's too much fun to play with - I would get bored! Like everyone else has said, if you are thinking about - go for it! It's not permanent, and not all that painful. And besides...it gets you a lot of attention! :)
