I am a junior in college, and ever since I came, I have gotten some sort of piercing. My freshman year I got my cartilage done in my left ear. Absolutely love it. My sophomore year I got my belly button done, and for the most part, I do like it. This year, I wanted to get something different done that I have not seen often in people. I decided to look online and asked people what they thought would be good. I also had to choose a piercing that would be acceptable in a high school setting. I am in school to become a high school math teacher, and I knew I needed to get a piercing that would be acceptable and that would still allow me to get hired when I look for a job in 2 years. After looking for a couple of weeks, I decided on getting my rook pierced. I chose it because not many people have heard of it and it was very different. It was also going to be acceptable enough that I can keep when I become a teacher.

I read many different accounts on how much it would hurt and what exactly would happen, but knew this was their piercing for me.

Since I have a very busy schedule, I wasn't able to get it done as soon as I wanted to. Finally, I made it to the local tattoo/piercing place where my college is located. I told them what I wanted and they told me they didn't do rook piercings there. They said they don't do it because there is such a high chance of getting cauliflower ear. I was saddened and a little bit scared now from what they told me. So I went back online to see how much of a chance there really was for cauliflower ear. I didn't find much on it so I assumed that the risks must be low. I also had 4 friends who had it done and they did not hear anything about it so I decided I still wanted to get it done. I just had to travel 30 minutes to the next nearest piercing place; the same place I got my belly button done.

I had a Friday off from work and school so I decided that it would be a great day to go and get my piercing done. I was very excited to finally get it done. My roommate and I made the trip to the piercing place and after paying and getting all the paperwork done, all I had to do was wait a few minutes for my piercer to finish up someone else. Then, it was time for me to go. I was super nervous but I had the same piercer as I did when I got my belly button done so I knew I was in good hands. When I was reading about people getting their rook's pierced, they commented on how they felt light headed and dizzy after getting it done. This also added onto my worry list because I get light headed and dizzy after getting blood so I knew it would be possible after getting a piercing done. I was also nervous about the pain that was coming but I knew I handled pain well so I just needed to think about what it would be like after.

My piercer asked to me to lie on my side because it would be the easiest way to pierce. After he had it marked, and I approved, it was time for me to take my deep breaths in and finally exhale slowly while he put the needle in. There was some pain, but it wasn't as horrible as I thought it was going to be. While waiting for the jewelry to be put in, there was some pressure, but like I said before, it was not that painful. Once everything was cleaned up and I got the pen that was used to mark my piercing (because they never use the same pen), I got to look at my piercing and it looked fabulous! When I came back out into the waiting room (my roommate was going to get her tattoo touched up so we were waiting for her time), I experienced no dizziness or light headedness. Everything went perfectly and I was very happy with my experience.

I had it done about one month ago (as of 4/19/08) and it seems to be healing nicely. I was very surprised as I was able to sleep on it right away, unlike my cartilage piercing. I try to soak it every day, but not always successful. I was surprised also on how easily the jewelry moved since it was done. All-in-all, I am very happy with my piercing and I recommend it to anyone who is considered getting it done. It is very unique and the pain is not horrible. Now, I just need to figure out what other piercings I will get for my next 2 years of college that I have left...
