I retired my standard lobe piercings when I was in the 7th grade; I never wore "cute" little earrings so I let them close. It took a while from them to close because my mother had gotten them pierced for me when I was 5. They finally did close, the only problem I had was when I got my vertical lobe pierced, it re opened and has since closed. I have wanted standard lobe piercings again for sometime, once I realized I could stretch them and adorn them with amazing (not "cute") jewelry. Being an impatient person, I didn't really think I could actually go through the whole stretching process to the gauge I really wanted, which was a 6. I thought about it for a little bit, and if I really wanted to get it done, obviously the answer was "yes".

So after a little deliberation I went to the local shop, which I have never been to before in my life. The piercer there came highly recommended and since I didn't have time to travel to my parlor I decided to scope the place out. After walking in, I realized that it was a very clean place, and the staff was very friendly. I told the piercer what I wanted and she informed me that she could pierce me at an 8 gauge and taper it through to the 6 gauge. I agreed, unfortunately, and I carefully read the forms (I'm training to become a paralegal, I read EVERYTHING very carefully) initialed where required and handed over my ID. The tattoo artists were curious to see this procedure done so I agreed to let them watch me.
My piercer led me back to the private piercing room, sat me down in the very uncomfortable "dentist" chair. Showed me that she was opening everything from the package, changed her gloves and massaged Technicare in my lobes. I was getting very anxious at this point, seeing as how I haven't had my lobes pierced for 13 years, I completely forgot what THIS particular piercing felt like. I have 6 other piercings but none of them are like getting an 8 gauge needle shoved through my ear. So she marked them, I approved and sat back down with my arms crossed. She told me to breathe in, breath out and take a deep breath and exhale when she pushed the 8 gauge needle through. I exhaled a little too soon, but amazingly the pain wasn't too bad at all. She did my right ear right after and went back and picked up the taper from the tray. I did the breathing technique "perfectly" but Jesus did that taper hurt. I scrunched my face up as it got thicker and reminded myself to keep breathing. She quickly put the jewelry through and threaded the ball, when the tattoo artist stated "You do realize how big that is right?" I nodded while my piercer mentioned something about my ear coagulating. She turned around to pick up the second taper when I was like "Oh.. ok" I felt the blood dripping down my neck and splashing on the paper towel she set down there. It was cool compared to the fire my ear felt. I was slightly annoyed by the trickle and she rushed to get closer to me to soak it up with a paper towel. I laughed at everyone's reaction, it was my blood, flowing down my neck, and I was the only one who wasn't pale or queasy looking. My piercer had the second best reaction and she cleaned it up and moved on to taper my right ear. The pain was worse, but only marginally. It didn't bleed nearly as much but it made me really light headed.
After the piercing, I sat in the chair for a good five minutes, eating a sucker because I was so light headed. I even ate lunch before I went and drank orange juice. After I felt I could stand, I paid and left. I sat in my car for a little bit to make sure I could actually stand the drive home, put my seatbelt on VERY carefully to avoid hooking it on my new puncture wounds. I drove to me work to pick up my schedule and I got very mixed reactions. Most of them were like "Oh what'd you do this time?" when they saw a little bit of blood on my neck from the drive there. However, a few of them were like "Oh wow..you're insane!" I laughed, took a couple of Ibuprofen and drove home. I just soaked them in sea salt, and they feel fine. My ears are super heavy feeling now though and it's hard to get used to. I wouldn't recommend this to people who are squeamish or don't like a lot of brute pain.
