A soon as I saw my friend Alice walk into school with her scaffold, I wanted it. We discussed it and she was fine with it - no accusing me of copying! I asked her so many questions I think she got bored of me. She was pretty good though, she pretty much told me anything and everything I wanted to know. I asked my Mum and, not very surprisingly, said yes immediately. I'm not spoiled, but when it comes to stuff like this she's pretty relaxed.

We went to our local piercer, Beorc, about two weeks ago but they didn't have any bars in. Highly disappointed, we left with the chance they'd have some in a week to two weeks. I checked regularly and finally, last Friday, they had one bar left. I went it and paid the fantastic £25 and asked the woman behind the counter about it; aftercare, healing time, piercing time et al. and she was really helpful and really lovely. I didn't find out her name but I did find out she's an aspiring fashion designer. She had her scaffold done three years ago and was giving me tips and telling me how it was when the piercer, Scott, came down the stairs from piercing someone else. My mum and my brother both insisted on coming to watch, which I guess reassured me.

He was told what I wanted, got the bar off me (which was fairly hard as I was so amazed it was happening I didn't let go immediately) and led me upstairs into the dark wood panelled, small, disinfectant-scented studio. The smell was a mixture of sickly and comforting. He dropped the bar into the little pot of thin, yellow liquid and told me the dangers, the serious aftercare and the constant attention it required. I was nervous, but not as much as I thought I would be really. He sat me on the little stool with the worn off velvet cover and cleaned my ear. He talked to me the whole time, probably to take my mind off what he was about it do. He drew the tiny dots on my ear to position it, first time perfect although on side is quite far forward in the ear itself so I have to be careful not to rip it.

He warned me before he froze my ear, which felt like freezing foam. Quite bizarre. He then clamped my ear, which hurt nowhere near as much as other stories say. He put one needle through as fast and as painless as could be hoped for. I did get that initial 'owww' response but it passed quickly. He then cut off the needle and did the other side, which hurt a lot less. No crunchy cartilage, much to the disappointment of my friend Jemma. I think what hurt the most was pulling the needles out and sliding the bar through, as he had to manipulate the raw ear. There was no blood at all which surprised me, but then I don't bleed easily. In no time at all I was looking at my brand new, shiny, not very sore looking scaffold. Scott gave me a piercing after care sheet and strict instructions not to remove the bar for at least 12 weeks. He told me to use Savlon spray, not the cream and to only use the Savlon spray with the pink lid and not the yellow as the yellow as iodine in it which isn't good. He told me it looked great and that I could leave.

I was so thrilled! I went downstairs, still shaking from the adrenaline, and squeaked at the woman behind the counter. She laughed as I grinned at her. When I showed her, the group of lads who were looking at stretching kits and plugs were all making pained noises and saying, "Look! She's just had a scaffold done!" I don't get how it's such a big deal really, it does look good though, even my brother thinks so and he's a bit of a geek. My mum was so pleased with it too. In a week, it's healed beautifully, hardly any harsh pain, only when I knock it and when I get headrushes. It's cleaned really easily until a couple of days ago when I caught it fairly badly and it started to go a bit scabby but a combination of the shower and Savlon Spay-on Wound Wash (which I use anyway to clean it) got rid of them. I also take zinc tablets every night, which are supposed to help healing. It's only been a week but I'm really optimistic and it looks so cute! I don't know if I'll get away with it at school really, but to be honest, it looks so good I don't care. I really recommend it to anyone who wants something different but easy to cover and really cute.
