My parents were never big on the whole "body modification" thing, so it was a giant achievement for me when I finally convinced them to let me get my ears pierced when I was eight. Yet in retrospect they weren't nervous without reason, I was hooked. Ever since that fateful day at Claire's I couldn't get further piercing out of my mind. I bit my tongue and settled for a second hole in my left year but I knew it wasn't enough.

Last august I finally convinced my mom to let me get my nose pierced with an "I'll do it with a safety pin if you don't take me" argument. We jetted off to the mall and into the tiny back room of Almoda. I was ridiculously nervous and let the pain get to my head, but in the end the sharp pain didn't last long and it was thoroughly worth it.
A couple of months later I was sitting in the PSATS and noticed something shining in the ear of the girl beside me. After not so smoothly glancing over a few times, I finally came out and asked her just what it was. She explained that it was an industrial, and I immediately fell in love. For the next nine months I couldn't get the thing out of mind, and towards the beginning of the summer I started my begging regime over.
Finally I had convinced the rents of this one last piercing and we set the date. A friend of mine had recommended Route 9 piercing and I trusted her experienced opinion without question. With my best friend in tow we headed out to get it done before our final summer trip to New Hampshire. Other than a quick return trip when I realized I had forgotten my ID, the prep went relatively smoothly. I sat down on one of the leather couches in the waiting room and watched Wedding Crashers while the piercer finished up with the clients before me. After fifteen minutes, one girl complaining about her throbbing nose, and plenty of Vince Vaughn laughs later, the piercer told me it was my turn. After the standard 10-20 minutes of waiting time while the jewelry was cleaned, I was led into a small white surgical-looking room. I lay down on the small table and turned my head. The piercer told me to relax, breathe, and explained to my mom that she couldn't hold my hand because I would tense up and the pain would be increased. After what felt like forever, he pressed the first needle through the bottom on my cartilage. It was uncomfortable but I continued to breathe as he finished the process. The rest of the piercing wasn't as clear but the pain was no where near as horrendous as I had imagined. Not only that, but it was over in a matter of seconds.
I lay on the seat a couple of more minutes just to settle my mind and continued to breathe. By the time I sat up the pain had been reduced to an insignificant throbbing. I walked over to the mirror and took a quick glance in the mirror. It was gorgeous! Perfectly placed, angled, and my ear was only a light shade of pink. Neither of my parents were particularly pleased but I did at least get a "not so bad as I thought". My friend and I, on the other hand, loved it and I was so glad I had built up the nerve to get it done. The price, seventy one dollars, was less than I had imagined and I was instructed to spray it with solution three times a day.
The next few hours were uncomfortable and I can still feel some pressure and heat five hours later, but it is barely noticeable. And most importantly, it looks amazing! I had psyched myself out about the pain, but honestly it was all in my head. By relaxing and not focusing on the needle, the pain was very manageable. I suggest anyone interested get this piercing...it is perfect!
If you are interested in this piercing (or any other) and live in Massachusetts, I highly suggest making the trip out to Route Nine Piercing and Tattoo- it's clean, comfortable, and (although I have nothing to compare it to) they are able to greatly reduce the pain. Overall my experience was positive and I am so glad I went through with it.
I hope this account has been helpful and although I only just got it done, don't hesitate to email or message me with any questions- chngemywrld21@yahoo.com or chngemywrld21 on AIM. Good luck to anyone getting theirs done, and this most important piece of advice I can give is to relax and make sure not to focus on the pain!
