I have always heard of piercings rejecting. I have even watched my sister vertical tragus reject, and been pushed away from getting my anti-eyebrow pierced because it rejects more than it stays in. But when my rook started to reject I had no idea that was what was happening.

I have always been a fan of piercing, but for respect for mom they were always on my ears. I had 3 lobe piercings, my tongue, and an anti-tragus, and wanted more. On July 1, 2006 my friends and I were out having a good time when I decided I should get a new piercing.

We drove to the Third Eye piercing parlor, this is the first time I'd ever gotten a piercing from here. We talked to the piercer and I told him I wanted some type of ear piercing. He touched my ear in different places until I found the one I liked the best, which I would soon learn was my rook. I sat in the chair, as he got out the purple marker. He began marking my ear in different places until I was satisfied. I decided I wanted to get a barbell and not a hoop, I like the way barbells look. My anti-tragus was also pierced with a barbell versus a hoop. I was a little nervous about getting the piercing. The piercing itself didn't hurt at all. Usually they say cartilage will make a crunch noise, but I didn't hear any noise at all. It didn't hurt anymore than any other piercing. There was a little blood, but other than that I was good to go.

I cleaned my piercing as I was told to and how I'd always cleaned other piercings. I cleaned most of my piercings with anti-bacterial soap, such as dial. In January 2005, I got my second lobes pierced at Claries, and they gave me an antiseptic wash. That is what I used to clean this piercing. I don't think that had any effect on the piercings after effects, because I have used it to clean other piercings that came out just fine. After about a week or so, the redness and swelling had gone away, but my ear was still very sore and puss-like. I continued to clean it as I had been. I began to ask other people about it, and they told me that a cartilage piercing takes longer to fully heal than others. After being told this, I stopped worrying and left it alone.

After about 4 weeks the piercing seemed a lot better, almost like it was healed. I was glad that it had finally gotten better and didn't hurt so much anymore. Much to my dismay about a month ago, it began to swell again. It hurt very badly. I hated to touch it, that's how much it hurt. I was almost to the point of wanting to take the ring out. I thought it must have gotten infected somehow or something was just wrong. But I figured the safest and best idea was to just take it out. I loved it so much; I never did take it out. I cleaned it with peroxide, soap, antiseptic; I would try anything hoping it would make it feel better. I finally asked a girl I knew who had done lots of self-piercings her opinion of it. She looked at it, and basically told me it looked gross. She did, however, tell me to clean it with Listerine. I was a little skeptical about using Listerine but didn't think anything could hurt it too much. As soon as I cleaned it, it felt much better. A breath of relief passed over my ear. It was a nice clean feeling.

I continued to clean it with Listerine for a few days. After those few days, I realized the Listerine wasn't actually helping, just making it feel better. So I stopped. About 3 days ago I was sitting at my friends house and was moving the barbell up and down, when she looked at it and told me it looked bad, and was barley even in my ear. That was then I realized that all the pain I had been experience was my ear rejecting my rook. I continued to move the barbell, and the next thing I knew was I was holding it in my hand. The barbell had dried blood on it. The ear hurt for a few minuets, but afterwards it began to feel better. I'm upset that I lost that piercing. I now have 9 piercings. I need to get another one to even it out. Ha ha. My ear feels much better now!

I knew piercings rejected and all, but it never occurred to me that even a simple ear piercing could reject. My ear now has a little red and scabby slit where it came out. I'm sad it fell out, but I'm also glad the pain has stopped! I've had to get used to the barbell not being there. I hope to get another piercing soon!
