Okay before we start this story contains 2 piercings because it takes TWO holes for an orbital and I have explained why I have two piercings. I briefly mention a helix and that's as far as it goes....

I wouldn't consider myself to be particularly interested in body modification. By that I mean I don't obsess over it as a past time. Then I started seeing this guy who was very into piercing, had two tattoos and had his heart set on suspending himself in Norwich. I began to admire his tattoos and look at the pictures on the web and realized I hadn't had a piercing or done some crazy with my hair in a long time and as tattoos are out of the question in my house that was not an option. Considering my mom considered piercing and mods to be another form of self mutilation I had done well so far. I sport a labret, navel, ears. I had decided I would like another piercing, an orbital which would be on the lobe of my ear. I really wanted an eyebrow but had heard so many bad things and was warned off by my parents if it was even hinted at. My mum knew I hated my ears and so told me, for badness, I could have a piercing there. Ah but what little she knew of the different kinds!

So that was it. An ear piercing it would be, I decided on an orbital as I had seen one before and thought it was for me.

Next came the equipment, I knew it needed to be sterile and clean so I was reluctant to purchase from eBay but this seemed a cheap option as well as a fast one because money was really the reason I was planning a self piercing. I purchased a pack of 5 14gauge needles, 5 pair's latex gloves, 5 Captive ball rings (autoclaved) and 5 pieces of cork. I was ready to make my piercing a reality!

The day came when I was to do it, my boyfriend came over as he wanted a helix, and I presumed he was piercing me but he backed out at the last minute and in the end I pierced him and myself. This by all means wasn't as bad as I thought! I wasn't too sure about orbitals and I had never pierced myself before so I researched differently websites and simply looked at how others were done. I did try to find a video of piercing but the website only had navel and septum. I decided to measure the orbital 12mm apart and mark it. I had to remark a few times as it didn't seem quite right but eventually I got it to my liking.

I washed my hands thoroughly with anti-bacterial soap and put on the gloves. I was shaking slightly but took a few deep breathes and told myself to wise up. I lightly pressed the needle tip to my ear and pushed. There was a sharp pain as I slowly pushed it through but I didn't mind because I didn't want to rush. As it popped onto the other side it slid through very easily.

(We had problems in that the CBRS did not fit the needle but could this have been that the jewellery needs to be a gauge smaller?)

Anyway as I was saying, the jewellery went through eventually after I worked out to pull the needle through until it was almost pulled out the back and then push the jewellery through. This worked absolutely find for the hole nearest my cartilage.

Next was the lobe itself which I had so it is just under the hole for my ear piercing which was done years ago for my aunts wedding? I thought this one would bleed a lot being that your ear lobe is basically a sack of blood but was pleasantly surprised when I pushed the needle through there was only a sharp pain and a feeling of my face rushing with heat, and no blood dripped out. But I imagined it gushing and convinced myself I could feel it.

Then there was another problem. I had two holes but for the life of me I couldn't get the jewellery out the other side!! It started hurting and I think it closed over while I was struggling but it was hard to see because it had started to bleed a little and a bubble of blood had formed. I gave up and re-pierced it and pushed the jewellery through.

After that I was a little shaken but I guess it's because I'm a worrier, so we started to clean up, placing the needles into the cork making it safe to put in the bin. Then began to clean up the piercing itself, which we did with warm water and a cotton bud. The weird part is I have the two holes I pierced at the back and a completely different one for my other Captive ball ring! I had two hoops through my ear for few weeks, which made me look like a pirate, as I had used two Captive ball rings because I could not figure out how I was going to get it into my ear! I had to change this to a nice little horseshoe I had for my labret because I was heading to a concert and there is nothing that screams stupid idea like a freshly pierced ear and 2 Captive ball rings at a concert.
