My longing for a daith piercing started when I notice my cousin's piercings. I thought they looked so cool! Her daith piercings were very subtle. She has two bars, not the rings, which lets her wear them to work without anyone really noticing. That's what I wanted.

It took me a year and half after that to get it done. I wanted to make sure it was really what I wanted for me, not just because it looked good on my cousin. If you're going to spend the money, you don't want to regret it later and take it out. That's just a waste of time for you and the piercer, not to mention a waste of money.

The day I finally decided I was going to get pierced I was so nervous! I called my cousin to ask her if it hurt really badly. She paused and said "yeah" in a tone that really said "duh". She told me to just breathe and not look at what the piercer was doing or the tools she would use. That proved to be very good advice. I'm not a needle fan, especially if I know this big needle is about to go through my skin.

I wanted to get both of them done at the same time for symmetrical reasons. I have four other piercings, so when I walked into the studio my nerves disappeared. These people were all familiar to me and so friendly. It wasn't until I was lying on the table with my ear all swabbed clean that I started to feel a little apprehensive. A friend went with me, because you can't just experience something like a new piercing or a tattoo without someone there to share in the excitement! I was lying there squeezing her hand and taking deep breaths with my eyes closed. I also tried to recite Shakespeare's 18th sonnet (I had to memorize it for class) to distract myself from what was about to happen. Halfway through an exhale I felt the needle go through my cartilage and it hurt! It seemed to take forever for her to get the ball secured, but finally it was in place. Whew! One down, one to go.

I now knew what to expect, so the second one should be slightly better right? Wrong! It was infinitely worse! She told me that was because I was expecting it. Before I didn't know what exactly it was going to feel like. She also said that she didn't mention that before because then I wouldn't have gotten them both done at the same time. She's right! I wouldn't have gotten them both done. But I am really glad I did. It saved me some money and I was able to get it all over with in one visit.

To celebrate my friend and I went to Maggie Moo's, my absolute favorite ice cream place in the whole United States! I immediately got compliments as soon as I walked in. The cashier was thinking about getting hers done. I told her to go for it! A guy that was in line behind me was also admiring them and didn't mind telling me so. He was a hot guy, so I definitely didn't mind talking to him. We ended up talking about piercings and tattoos and all sorts of other stuff for hours after that. We became friends and I still hang out with him now.

Cleaning wasn't as bad as I was expecting. It hurt, but now, three months later, I barely remember the pain. I used a warm saline solution and a Q-tip. There is a debate on whether you should use soap or not. I was told not to and I agree that it is better to just use saline. This is how it was explained to me. The reason soap burns is because it's killing bacteria, good and bad. When your piercing is healing new skin cells are being formed. When you wash it with soap you end up killing not only the bad, but also the good bacteria and new skin cells that are trying to form. The saline solution keeps the area clean without killing the newly formed skin cells. Sounds good to me!

Sleeping on either side of my head was easier than they said it would be. The rings fit so nicely that it's really hard to disturbed them, which makes them heal faster. That is a definitely plus.

It's been three months since I was last pierced. Two days ago I went back to exchange my rings for two bars. I love them! My cousin has bars and that is what I initially fell in love with. So now they are perfect! I have exactly what I want! I would recommend these piercings to anyone who wants them. The only warning I'm going to give is make sure whatever piercing you get, daith or otherwise, is one you want for yourself because it helps express your true self.
